I have a sister in the Outer Hebrides who I see rarely but speak to frequently. Tonight while on the phone she mentioned something about her goldfish. The following conversation went something like this....

Me: I didn't know you had goldfish!
Sister: No? We've had goldfish for ages.
Me: What are they called?
Sister: I don't know.
Me: How can you not know what your goldfish are called?!
Sister: They have funny daft names...
Sister (shouting to partner): What are the goldfish called again?
Sister's partner: One's called Rachel after the bus driver and the other one's called Archie.
Me: Archie? No way!
Sister's partner: Archie's just Archie because he thinks he's Archie.
Me: 0_o

By all accounts Archie the goldfish is quite content! Sister and partner have no spaniel but they do have two cats and a staffie bull terrier who is quite possibly the most dignified dog I have ever met in my life!

Apparently Archie the goldfish has survived for three years despite the attentions of sister's cat so he seems to be pretty resilient!

I used to think Archibald was a dignified name. But seeing as our Stupid!Cat was called Archibald and that there's now a goldfish sharing the name, "dignified" is not the first attribute that leaps to mind. Shame, that. Archie deserves better (in every respect).

I knew several Archies at school, I was quite close to one them! It's still a fairly common name in the outer Hebrides thought its regarded as rather old fashioned.

I think there is extensive concurring with Mr Bush and Mr Hornblower in that area - but as to whether it is zen contemplation - hmmn, well

Thomas Merton once said that ther should be a little zen in all human creativity and expereivnce- and as far as that concerns parts of Mr Kenendy's anatomy that may confirm it!
