Earlier this week [livejournal.com profile] eglantine_br asked me the following question in an e-mail...

Btw--a mouse is something on a ship right? I seem to remember Captain Aubrey complaining about his mouse--and I can hear him and Mr Bush in my head now, snickering.

I confess I had no idea if a mouse was a thing, so I looked it up in my copy of Falconer's Dictionary of the Marine, which was a wonderful gift from the lovely [livejournal.com profile] esteven and of course [livejournal.com profile] eglantine_br and Jack are right. A mouse is indeed a thing! This kind of thing to be precise:

MOUSE a knot or knob, wrought on the outside of a rope, by means of spun-yarn, parcelling, &c. as the knot wrought on the stay of a ship, which prevents the collar from closing round the mast-head.

It is particularly used on the stays of the lower mast, to prevent the eye from slipping up the mast; a circumstance which would render it extremely difficult to remove the stay from the mast head, when necessary.

To MOUSE a Hook, to pass a yarn or fox around the hook or block, in order to prevent its clearing itself from any thing it may be hooked to.

So there you have it. Clear as mud! Captain Aubrey and Mr Bush can go on snickering.

Notes: The last instalment of The Silver Razor series. Lord Hornblower's valet is curious about the origins of the old silver razor.

Notes: Grim Kingston angst fic. A companion piece to Pointless, and which refers back to Friend and Foe and Kiss of Life. Apologies for the second person. I've no idea why it came out like this.

Even now you would sell what little remains of your soul to see him smile. )

Hello from The Far Side Of the World!

Arrived safely in New Zealand last weekend. I still can't figure out exactly how many days I spent on that damn plane but I did remember to text [livejournal.com profile] sarlania when I passed through Melbourne. I spent most of the flight watching Pirates of the Caribbean films on the basis that they were the only thing on offer with boats and sailors in; and reading [livejournal.com profile] charliecochrane's Lessons in Power which I thought was excellent.

Since arriving in the Bay of Plenty I have done a great deal of nothing. The main reason for this trip was to let daughter spend time with family so we haven't really done any traveling, we did the big tour down to South Island last time we were here anyway. Highlights of the holiday so far have been the gorgeous view of the Pacific from FiL's farm, daughter's birthday party, wine tasting at the local winery, and the discovery of an antique print shop with the most eclectic collection of prints I've ever seen. Partner and I spent a very dusty afternoon rifling through the collection and came away with a fine collection of boaty pictures and some very fetching prints of men in breeches. We also went to see a Super 14 rugby match tonight, the Hamilton Chiefs played the Natal Sharks in torrential rain on over on the west coast. It was a pretty scrappy game given that neither team could hang on to the ball because it was so wet but it was very entertaining to see some proper kiwi rugby and both teams had pretty players.

Low point of the trip has been mosquitos, sandflies and weird family dynamics, but the less said about that the better.

Age of sail related landmarks are few and far between here though I did spot a farm called Archie's Orchard just up the road and the 50 cent peice has a lovely image of Endeavour on it. Otherwise that's it. I haven't been idle though! I've fnsihed reading Escape from France which is amazing and inspiring and Flying Colours which is less so :/ and I've also written one and a half fics which I'll inflict on you when I get back.

I've only got occassional internet access here but I have managed to keep an eye on LJ and was imensely entertained by [livejournal.com profile] esmerelda_t's post about dreams on [livejournal.com profile] following_sea. I very rarely remember dreams of any kind and the only Hornblower character I have ever dreamt about is Mr Bush! (wtf?!) But what do you know, last night I actually dreamt about Horatio and Archie!! I was below deck on a ship with them, Horatio was doing up his jacket with Archie standing behind him, the ship lurched and I caught Archie round the waist to stop him from stumbling. They were both wearing 1920's style uniform jackets but still looked very smart. When I went up on deck the dream had turned into a film which partner and I were watching. I asked partner what had happened to Archie and he said he'd been eaten by a crocodile (!) The end. Don't even begin to analyse that one ;)

Hope you guys are all well, miss you all and will look forward to catching up properly when I get home.

Seriously, sometimes you have to wonder what the Royal Navy were up to when it came to naming their ships.

At one end of the scale, I have always wondered about the audacity (or foolhardiness?) of men who would sail into the uncharted wastes of the Arctic in ships call Erebus and Terror. Erebus in Greek mythology being the personification of darkness and son of Chaos.

At the other end of the scale, who in their right mind decided to call a ship of war the Cherub? A very successful ship of war she was though, with a famously loyal and dedicated crew. The Cherub is perhaps best known as the consort of HMS Phoebe. Both ships were despatched to the Americas in 1813 to track down and apprehend the frigate USS Essex which was wreaking havoc among British merchant vessels on the coast of Chile. The mission was eventually successful and the Essex run on shore and destroyed, though her captain David Porter later accused the captains of the British ships of dishonourable conduct.

Then yesterday when reading Edward Osler's Life of Admiral Viscount Exmouth I came across a sloop of war called the Fairy. Turns out that the RN had no less than four small ships named Fairy between 1778 and 1840.

You know that scene in Retribution where Bush is rallying the sailors and marines during the assault on the fort in Samana Bay and he's bellowing "Renown's to me!!" It's not really going to have quite the same effect if your ship's called the Fairy or the Cherub is it?!

Really, you've got to love these guys :)

Title: Pointless
Author: Anteros
Characters: Bush, Kennedy, Hornblower
Rating: R
Notes: Just what this fandom needs; gratuitous Retribution angst fic. The title says it all really. This is a poor intrlude to [livejournal.com profile] rosiespark's The Simplest Gift and Revelation. I wrote it not long after I recc'd these wonderful fics and it's been hiding in my drafts folder ever since. I suspect it should probably have stayed there.

He sat and waited, book in hand, just holding it. )

Title: Debt
Author: Anteros
Characters: Bush, Hornblower, (Kennedy)
Rating: R
Notes: My first attempt at Bush!fic and it's a weird bookverse movieverse hybrid :} Set on Hotspur, after Bush leaves Hornblower's cabin having taken issue with the report in the Gazette but before receiving the signal from Flag. Still movieverse though due to lingering presence of you-know-who. In some ways this is also a sequel to [livejournal.com profile] rosiespark's wonderful fics The Simplest Gift and Revelation. Huge thanks to [livejournal.com profile] esmerelda_t for patient and helpful beta.

Bush threw the copy of the Naval Chronicle down on the table with sufficient force to make the wardroom steward start. )

Warnings: Stupid, stupid, stupid Hornblower / LoTR Crossover Crackfic
Notes: I'm blaming [livejournal.com profile] gayalondiel for this one, although [livejournal.com profile] nodbear's not completely blameless. Gaya said "when someone new comes along and asks who pushed Captain Sawyer. Which is a worthy question (for the uninitiated, it's the equivalent of whether Balrogs have wings)". That resulted in a stupid plot bunny. [livejournal.com profile] gayalondiel m'dear, you can have this as a slightly belated birthday present. Everyone else might want to just ignore it. I'm going to pretend it never happened ;)

Title: The Wrong Trousers
Author: Anteros
Characters: Bush / Kennedy, Hornblower
Rating: NC-17
Warnings: Crackfic. With added stupidity.
Notes: Right. This is going to take a bit of explaining so bear with me. [livejournal.com profile] esmerelda_t has a highly original and very tragic LKU fic, To Sail The Seven Seas, which I am rather in awe of. I won't spoil the fic if you haven't read it, suffice to say Kennedy survives Kingston, turns to piracy and many years later is apprehended by Hornblower. Like I said, it's tragic and makes me cry. However there is no fic so tragic that it can't be turned to crack. At some point [livejournal.com profile] esmerelda_t decreed that if Archie was a pirate the he must also be in possession of a pair of, ummm, leather trousers. And that's where the plot bunnies took hold....

The brig was lit by a single horn shuttered lantern )

I have just opened one of my brand new (to me) CSF books at a random page and what's the first paragraph my eye lights on? This is....

"Bush watched as Hornblower's capable fingers worked the parallel rulers across the chart; Hornblower had long bony hands with something of beauty about them, and it was actually fascinating to watch them doing work at which they were so supremely competent. The powerful fingers picked up the pencil and ruled a line.

"There's the point of interception," said Hornblower."

Good lord! That was a random book opened at a random page! Are they all like that?!

And there was me thinking F is for Fidget was nonsense ;)

More on my lovely new books later, have to dash.

Title: Disturbance
Author: Anteros
Characters: Bush, Hornblower / Kennedy
Rating: G
Notes: A tiny thing inspired by a comment [livejournal.com profile] esmerelda_t made on The Factor. The original plot bunny her comment generated was quite filthy. This is a bit more thoughtful. I'll write the filthy version another time perhaps ;)

He was a good listener. Attuned to the resonance and cadence of life aboard ship. He could judge the set of the sails or the mood of the men just by listening. But what he heard aboard Renown disturbed him.

It was the silences he noticed first. The space between words. What passed between them that was not said. Glances that spoke volumes flitting across the deck. Conversations that ended abruptly, with looks of annoyance and amusement.

And the silence that seeped at times through the thin partition of his cabin wall. That quite deliberate absence of sound rang in his ears like a broadside as William Bush lay sweating on his cot in the dark heat of the middle watch. Trying not to hear the silence. Trying not to imagine. Trying not to see the damp dark curls and blue eyes closing.

Title: HMS Renown, 31st December 1801
Author: Anteros
Characters: Buckland, Bush, Hornblower, Kennedy
Rating:PG
Notes: A tiny thing posted in response to [livejournal.com profile] sarlania's [livejournal.com profile] following_sea New Year prompt. All these things are done in my part of the world to see in the New Year.

I

First Lieutenant Buckland is on the quarterdeck. The bell tolls the end of the first watch. Through the dark other bells from other ships toll and toll and toll, marking the end not just of the watch but of another year. Another year of service, another year without promotion. The old lieutenant descends the companion to see in the new year.

II

Second Lieutenant Bush is in the wardroom. He puts on his hat and greatcoat in readiness for the middle watch. Before he leaves he opens one of the small hinged panes in the wardroom window to let out the old year and bring in the new. He feels slightly foolish doing this but he has done it every years since he was a boy. Still, he is glad that he is alone in the wardroom, that no one else has seen this small act of faith.

III

Third Lieutenant Hornblower is in the galley bartering his spirit ration with the cook for a lump of coal. He has no idea what he will do with the coal, but Kennedy has told him it's important and so he will stop at nothing until he gets it.

IV

Fourth Lieutenant Kennedy is in his cabin, boots kicked off, jacket and waistcoat folded on his sea chest. He is lying on his bunk arms folded behind his head waiting for a tall, dark man to come and first foot him, thus bringing him luck for the rest of the year. God knows, they're going to need it.
