I'm just back from a couple of nights camping on the Isle of Bute and we went to visit Mount Stuart House, one of the homes belonging to the Marquis of Bute. Even among the ranks of the British aristocracy, the Butes have a reputation for extravagance and tax avoidance on a grand scale. The family recently "found" a Shakespeare First Folio in Mount Stuart's library and I have it on very good authority that while the folio is unquestionably genuine, the story of it's sudden discovery is bullshit. Mount Stuart was built between 1879-1900 and it is so far over the top it's ridiculous. How's this for Neo Gothic bling?

Oh my goodness, where did the last five months go?! I can't believe the last time I posted here was February! Huge apologies for the radio silence and tank you so much to everyone who posted birthday wishes even though I wasn't here. You're all so very kind :)

All's well here, but I've been very tied up with work. I'm still working in Edinburgh so I've got a long commute twice a week and most of my other evenings are tied up ferrying daughter to and from her sports clubs. She's ten now, and almost as tall as me already. How on earth did that happen?!

Even though I haven't been here, I haven't forsaken our beloved navyboys! Not by a long shot. I'm involved in running a naval history research committee and am also helping to organise a conference on maritime masculinities in December. Both of which are very rewarding but take up a lot of time. And of course [livejournal.com profile] nodbear and I have been putting the finishing touches to our book which will be published in September. More about that in a separate post later hopefully. I've also been gathering bits and pieces of things which I've been meaning to post here for ages so hopefully I'll have a chance to post them soon. I'm on holiday for the next fortnight for the first time since Christmas so I'm looking forward to having a good break.

I hope you're all well and life is being kind to you and your loved ones. L x

My kitties are very grown up now too as you can see :)

I have to confess I have also been moonlighting as SnK trash on tumblr and seem to have written a stupid amount of Eruri fic, but the less said about that the better :}

I had hoped to sneak that in under the wire, but I'm a little late... :}

Many Happy Returns!

Happy Birthday my dear friend [livejournal.com profile] katriona_s!

rls_day_1.jpg

I hope you have a splendid day my dear, filled with fun and friendship and snuggles with Mr Uma :)

Btw, in case you're wondering why I'm sending you a pirate flag for your birthday, please be aware that this is not just any old pirate flag. Oh no. This is a very special, official pirate flag flown by the National Library of Scotland to celebrate Robert Louis Stevenson's birthday last November. Note RLS's characteristic moustache :} There are actually very strict rules about what flags can be flown from national public institutions in the UK so how the National Library got away with this I have no idea! It brought a smile to a lot of faces all over Edinburgh that day :) Even the librarians were excitedly tweeting pictures of it!

If you're looking for some light entertainment this weekend I can highly recommend perusing Treadway Toomey's catalogue for their forthcoming auction of Fine Timepieces, Erotica and Decorative Arts from the estate of Candice B. Groot (what an epic name!). And my goodness what an eclectic eye Candice had when it came to erotica!! There's all sorts here from a wide range of periods, every corner of the globe, catering to an astonishing array of kinks.

What did you say the time was? )

Interestingly, though perhaps unsurprisingly given the date of the collection, there is only one piece of homosexual erotica and, predictably, it's a crude (in every sense of the word) illustration of sailors.

It had to be sailors... )

The catalogue coyly warns that:

Many items in this collection are of an erotic nature. Images in this online catalog may be inappropriate for minors and the gentle of heart.

I can't comment on the gentleness of your hearts, but you're all grownups, so I'm not going to warn for erotica, but I am going to warn for the hilariously bad taxidermy which also features in the collection. Not that I'm in the business of kink shaming anyone, but seriously, what were you thinking Candice?!

Hello. I haven't quite fallen off the face of the internet, though I may have been temporarily seduced by an anime fandom on tumblr. Ahem. Moving swiftly on. Anyway, look at this! I so want to see this film. Beautiful boats and beautiful animation. What more could I ask for?!

Doesn't it look gorgeous? :)

Dearest [livejournal.com profile] eglantine_br I'm so sorry I'm late with this birthday greeting. I seem to permanently late these days. I should take a leaf out of Lord Chatham's book and call myself The Late Lady Anteros :}

Anyway here's a poem I've been saving for you. It's called Discontinuity, it's by the Shetland poet Christine De Luca and written in her native Shetlandic tongue but I've added an English translation. It looks pretty incomprehensible written down but, oh, just listen to the poet reading it here.

Discontinuity

I could blame da wye da sea is smoothed
da stanes; da sylk o touch; da waelin, laevin;
an will da haert be dere whin I come back?

Or I could blame da saandiloo. He wis clear
whit wye ta geng: dis wye noo, nae luikin
owre your shooder. Tide dusna wait;

see da wye da swill o joy is drained.
Dance daday. Damoarn you slip
inta eternity.

Or I could blame da hush at fills you
til you’re lik ta burst wi aa da wirds
at could be said but you hadd back.

Hit’s whit happens whan you step
in time, but sense a fault-line vimmerin
trowe you: dis side or dat?

Only da sea can greet an sing at da sam time:
shade an licht: cobalt, ultramarine an dan
da lönabrak – a tize, a frush o whicht.

I could blame the wide sea that smoothed
the stones; the silk of touch; the selecting, leaving;
and will the heart be here when I come back?

Or I could blame the ringed plover. He was clear
which way to go: this way now, no looking
over your shoulder. Tide doesn't wait

see the way the swell of joy is drained.
Dance today. Tomorrow you slip
into eternity.

Or I could blame the hush that fills you
till you're like to burst with all the words
that could be said but you held back.

It's what happens when you step
in time; but sense a fault line trembling
through you: this side or that?

Only the sea can cry and sing at the same time:
shade and light: cobalt, ultramarine and then the surge,
the temptation, a splutter of white.

I hope you had a good birthday and hopefully the Christmas / Birthday jollyboat will reach you soon. A x

Every year, when daughter was small, she would leave out a glass of milk and something sweet for Santa on Christmas Eve. (Along with a carrot for Rudolph of course.) Last year she decided Santa deserved a glass of wine instead of milk. Hallelujah! This year however Santa is getting a glass of cranberry juice because, as toots pointed out, he shouldn't drink wine while driving the sleigh. I tentatively suggested that the reindeer could probably drive themselves, but she was having none of it :}

Meanwhile, Niko has been stealing Christmas presents and opening them. Little thief!

Hope you all have a wonderful Christmas when it comes :)

Hey folks, remember me? I know some of you do because you've sent me wonderful Christmas cards and gifts :) Thank you all so much, consider yourselves all hugged and kissed.

Alas my own cards and gifts won't be arriving until the New Year, I've had to put Christmas on hold as I've been completely laid up with a nasty throat infection since finishing work last week. I've spent the last five days stuck in bed bunged to the eyes with penicillin so unfortunately cards have gone unwritten and presents unwrapped. Hopefully I'll be on the mend soon and I'm looking forward to having a long overdue catch up. I hope you guys are all well and enjoying the festive season where ever you are.

Much love,
A

Can I just get this in under the wire for Halloween? Maybe if I'm quick :} Here's G.M. Woodward and Isaac Cruikshanks The Dance of Death Modernised which features, among other topical characters of the early 1800s, a one legged Jack Tar with whom Death is on very familiar terms...

Grab the nearest book. Find the 5th sentence on page 23. Append it to the paragraph below. Append your name to the list below of people who have contributed to the paragraph. Post the result to your LJ, and wonder if Oscar Wilde could possibly have written this. (Now with added Oscar! - Anteros_lmc)

They also talk of our being guilty of injustice, and their being the victims of an unjustifiable war. Brandy, and Tom got increasingly close-mouthed and sour. Although a certain sense of tripartite society survived down to Christian times, the three classes described in the Eddic poem "Rigdthula" bear little resemblance to Dumezil's three. It is often argued, and still oftener thought, that none but bad men would desire to weaken these salutary beliefs; and there can be nothing wrong, it is thought, in restraining bad men, and prohibiting what only such men would wish to practice.

At its nearest point the wall was little more than one league from the City, and that was south-eastward. I know I've posted dozens of pictures of Culzean over the years but it is such a glorious place* I hope you'll forgive me for posting a new more. We've been having a gorgeous autumn up here which more than makes up for the crappy summer. (Hey look [livejournal.com profile] aletheiafelinea! I caught a butterfly! I'm sure you'll already seen the reports about HMS Victory's new paint job which appeared in the press a couple of weeks ago. I've been following the restoration research for a while so it's fascinating to see what the original 1805 paint colour looks like. In addition to analysing seventy-two layers of paint from the hull, the research team also examined the purser's logs to ascertain the quantities of different colours of paint procured around the time of the battle of Trafalgar. The restoration team knew the existing colour scheme was too dark but it seems that they didn't expect the more authentic paint colours to be quite so pink :) Ironically, the ship's more familiar black and and orange livery is thought to have been similiar to the colours worn by the French fleet.

There's an article summarising the research here; HMS Victory to be re-painted in Battle of Trafalgar colours after 210 years, and one of the many press reports here; Restored HMS Victory raises eyebrows with new pink shade.

I have a new friend. He appeared in the park beside my house a few weeks ago and daughter immediately christened him Albert, which seems like a fine name for an elephant. Albert is a life sized sculpture of an Indian elephant commissioned as part of the cultural legacy of last year's Commonwealth Games. He stands just outside The House for an Art Lover looking towards the river. He's an impressive beastie and was looking particularly magnificent gazing stoically into the mist the other morning :)

Thankfully work is starting to calm down a little here. I'm no longer working at weekends, though most evenings are still taken up with commuting back from Edinburgh or ferrying daughter to and from swimming training. Watching rugby is also taking up rather a lot of time these days :} Hope you guys are all well, and look forward to catching up with you all again.

Not AoS, but I love this photograph from The National WWII Museum, New Orleans.

uss_saratoga.jpg

I think the cataloguer was rather fond of it too...

146. Photograph. “File No: SAC-R-7-205343. January 18, 1944. Carrier ‘concert’—Romance and thoughts of home intermingle in the minds of crewmen listening to a musical shipmate’s selections (on an accordion) on the forward turret of a five inch gun aboard the USS Saratoga – en route to battle.” 18 January 1944

I wonder how many of them returned from battle?

A few pics from Greenwich last week. The National Maritime Museum was looking very pretty in the sun and Cutty Sark was stunning as usual :) I was down for a committee meeting so I only saw them in passing, but still, there are worse venues for a meeting!

Hello. Remember me? I haven't quite fallen off the edge of the internet :}

Work has been all encompassing for the last few months; I'm currently working on four different contacts so evenings and weekends have kinda gone to the wall. Hopefully I'll be able to off load some of the work soon though.

Anyway, enough of that, those of you who follow [livejournal.com profile] nodbear might have seen that our big news is that finally, after three years and many interruptions, our book on the midshipmen of HMS Indefatigable is finally finished. [livejournal.com profile] nodbear came up to Glasgow last week so we could finish off the manuscript and on Sunday we sent it off to the publishers. Hurray! I can't believe we finally did it. It'll be next year before the book sees the light of day, but we'll keep you posted and let you know how things progress. Thank you all for your interest and support over the years, it wouldn't have been half as much fun without you :)

cheer

Huzzah!

I came across this delightful quote in a naval biography recently. I'll leave you to imagine my reaction...

Smooth, brilliant, speckless, a thing so brilliant in form, so graceful in position, so admirably proportioned.....the whole compact, fitted utility and beauty, even more perfectly than that wondrous thing of twelve inches length, on which I had looked with so much admiration!

In case you're wondering, the author is comparing a ship model to an actual ship. Why? What else did you think he was referring to? :}

When we got back from holiday we discovered that our neighbours have got a new puppy. *Awwww* And guess what he's called? Archie :D He's an adorable (of course) black spaniel (of course) with velvet ears and puppy dog eyes that would melt the heart of even the most repressed and angst ridden junior officer. Sadly I don't have a picture of Archie the puppy, so you'll have to make do with this Archie instead ;)
