I had hoped to sneak that in under the wire, but I'm a little late... :}

Many Happy Returns!

Title: The Anniversary
Author: Anteros
Characters: Kennedy / Hornblower
Rating: G
Notes: I started writing this in December five years after I posted my first fic Grey to Black. At that time, I thought I'd completely missed the boat with Hornblower fandom (still my first and only fandom <3) so it was wonderful to meet so many creative and welcoming folk here on LJ, many of whom have become great friends in RL. I haven't got nearly as much time for fic writing these days as I would like, but the plot bunnies are still breeding and the odd fic does still occasionally make it out of my drafts folder. Anyway, I just wanted to write something to mark the occasion and to say thank you to everyone who makes the Hornblower fandom such a wonderful place to be :)

Title: The Silver Razor: Smallbridge
Author: Anteros
Characters: Hornblower, OMC, Brown, Annette, (Bush), (Kennedy)
Rating: G
Notes: The last instalment of The Silver Razor series. Lord Hornblower's valet is curious about the origins of the old silver razor.

This 19th Century British School portrait of "a lady seated with a dog on her lap" is being auctioned in Glasgow this weekend. I do believe it's Mrs Arbuthnot Abercrombie and Master Bartholomew! I wonder if there's a corresponding portrait of Lord H with Mr K on his lap? :P

I don't think this is quite what Mr K had in mind when he asked Lord H to take Bartholomew for a walk! There'll be trouble when he finds out the old bugger has been promenading with Miss Chloe....

Can you think of a better way to start the weekend than with a gratuitous picture of Horatio and Archie making eyes at each other? No? Thought not :)

Title: Mariette
Author: Anteros
Characters: Archie Kennedy, Horatio Hornblower, Mariette
Rating: G
Notes: I wrote this ages ago and forgot all about it until I watched The Frogs and The Lobsters again recently. It's just a sort of small "missing scene" that adds to Just A Man.

...it's just that work is taking up way too much time these days. I fell victim to higher education turmoil last year when I was made redundant by my former university, and although I've been able to continue working for the research unit I've been with for the last ten years, I'm now employed by a different university on short term research contracts. I worked as a contract researcher years ago and, now as then, it involves silly amounts of work, precarious contracts and continually submitting proposals for every scrap of funding available. We've been quite successful in securing funding but it's a lot of work and it doesn't leave much time for anything else. Added to that, one of the projects I'm working on is based in the US so most evening are spent on conference calls with colleagues on the other side of the pond, rather than writing about navyboys. I'll leave you to decide what I'd rather be doing :} Aaaanyway, I shouldn't really complain, I'm still getting paid after all and that's something to be thankful for. Also we're off camping for a few days over the weekend so that'll be a nice break :) So, apologies for being rather scarce around these parts and for being slow to reply to posts and comments, I haven't forgotten you guys!

Notes:I'm posting this for the [livejournal.com profile] following_sea Way To A Man's Heart challenge, but I'm afraid it's a complete cheat. I didn't have time to write anything new for the challenge so I've salvaged this from my drafts folder. It only makes a passing reference to food (blink and you'll miss it) but there's certainly lurve involved ;) ETA I should probably add that this isn't nearly as grim as the title suggests. In fact there's only the tiniest smidgen of angst!

Hornblower checked his watch, frowning briefly; they should have been gone ten minutes ago, but there was still no sign of Archie. )

Some time ago [livejournal.com profile] marine_lapwing asked if she could arrange for some of my fics to be translated into Russian for Fandom Kombat. At the time I was rather astonished that anyone would want to go to the bother of translating anything I'd written, but I was more than happy to donate some fics.

I'd forgotten all about this until earlier this evening when I got a very unexpected message from Ms Lapwing with links to the translations and the Fandom Kombat forum, along with some lovely, lovely comments from the Russian fans. So I'd just like to say huge thanks to [livejournal.com profile] marine_lapwing, [livejournal.com profile] shepet, the translators and betas who took the time to make these stories available to Russian readers. I've said it before and I'll say it again, Hornblower fans are just the best!

I can only apologise for my own woeful language skills, but Google translate tells me that the appropriate thing to say is

Большое спасибо!

Title: Absolution
Author: Anteros
Characters: Archie Kennedy / Horatio Hornblower
Rating: NC-17
Notes: This is a continuation of The Boat because [livejournal.com profile] eglantine_br said she wanted to hear about the penance. It was supposed to be pwp but, tbh, it's a bit tame :} It also won't really make any sense unless you've read The Boat, but in my defence, they are both short ;)

Think of it as a penance if it pleases you. )

Author: Anteros
Characters: Hornblower, Kennedy, Pellew, Bracegirdle
Rating: G
Notes: I'm a few days late with this now, but never mind. This is for [livejournal.com profile] eglantine_br who wondered what they were doing on the Indy at midsummer. Bretons, Cornish, Scots, they all share common traditions.

It was Hornblower who had been first to notice the unusual activity on shore )

Posting Duchess and the Devil screencaps over at [livejournal.com profile] following_sea reminded me of something else I've been meaning to post for ages. I've always been curious about Pellew's reaction to Hornblower's captivity and escape, and the utterly improbable reappearance of Archie several years after he'd presumably been given up for dead. How would he have responded to their absence and return? Alas the series gives us very little indication.

Several of the Indefatigable's historical midshipmen did actually get captured by the French while crewing prizes, though mercifully all where swiftly exchanged or managed to escape and return to their ship. We can only imagine what Pellew must have felt on learning that they had been captured, but one of their fellow midshipmen, Nicholas Pateshall, lamented their fate in a letter to his brother:

The most valuable of our prizes which I mentioned in my last was retaken by a French privateer within 5 miles of Falmouth in which I lost a worthy messmate and two other midshipmen.

Donat Henchy O'BrienThere is one letter from Pellew however, written in direct response to a former prisoner of war, Donat Henchy O'Brien. O'Brien was captured while serving as a master's mate aboard the Hussar frigate, which was wrecked off the Saints in 1803, while carrying despatches from Pellew. Thus began five years of imprisonment at Charlemont, Verdun and the notorious citadelle of Bitche. O'Brien was not a man to be contained though, he managed to escape, or in his own words “went on the tramp”, three times and during his second failed solitary attempt survived a gruelling month on the run along the banks of the Rhine in the depth of winter. O’Brian finally got away with three companions after descending the ramparts of Bitche and walking half the length of Europe from Lorraine to Trieste. After the war, O'Brian wrote an account of his experiences called My Adventures During The Late War: An account of his shipwreck, captivity, and escape from France, after undergoing a series of sufferings which lasted for nearly five years. Following publication, O'Brien sent a copy of his narrative to Pellew who responded with the following letter.

London, 14th May, 1825
My Dear Sir

I found on my table, on my return home, your kind note and your Narrative. I feel very much obliged to you for both, but particularly for the latter, which I shall preserve well bound, that my grandchildren may read and admire your manly and unconquerable spirit,—your indefatigable zeal and perseverance; giving a noble example to their young minds of what a British officer can do for the honour of his country and his own.

Accept my sincere and cordial thanks, and believe me, my very sincere good wishes will ever attend you.

I have the honour to be,
      My dear Sir,

Most faithfully and much yours,
Exmouth.

I love the fact that Pellew refers to O'Brian's "indefatigable zeal" and I like to think that he would have responded to Archie's attempts to escape in similar terms.
