...it's just that work is taking up way too much time these days. I fell victim to higher education turmoil last year when I was made redundant by my former university, and although I've been able to continue working for the research unit I've been with for the last ten years, I'm now employed by a different university on short term research contracts. I worked as a contract researcher years ago and, now as then, it involves silly amounts of work, precarious contracts and continually submitting proposals for every scrap of funding available. We've been quite successful in securing funding but it's a lot of work and it doesn't leave much time for anything else. Added to that, one of the projects I'm working on is based in the US so most evening are spent on conference calls with colleagues on the other side of the pond, rather than writing about navyboys. I'll leave you to decide what I'd rather be doing :} Aaaanyway, I shouldn't really complain, I'm still getting paid after all and that's something to be thankful for. Also we're off camping for a few days over the weekend so that'll be a nice break :) So, apologies for being rather scarce around these parts and for being slow to reply to posts and comments, I haven't forgotten you guys!

Does this mean you are more likely to come to the US any time soon? (I am still trying to get the mustelid mucous thing sorted out over here.)

We miss you too.

Possibly! I got invited to a meeting in Berkeley in June but there's no way I can get childcare sorted so one of my colleagues is going instead. There's a chance I might be in DC in November though! If I do make it over, I'll be sure to come and visit :)

Good luck with that!

I am so glad to know that you are still in employment, no matter how short term or time consuming it is. :)

It goes without saying that you still love your navy boys.
*hugs*

Admit it, you hussy, you've found someone else. How could you. As if Archie hasn't suffered enough.

Dammit! How did you find out about my wild boozy nights with Mr Buckland?!

I deducted it with Sherlock-sharp wit, after Mr Buckland has taken to looking completely shagged out in the mornings!

He does look a bit shagged out. I might have to ask Dr Clive to give him a little something to perk him up...

Sounds like you're in good hands, both Mr Buckland and you.

I first read that as "...for when the captain returns to the port" :} Has Ned been at the decanter again?!

I'm sorry to hear that you are so busy, but as you said it's wonderful that you still have the meaningful job! Please take care of yourself.

It's certainly better to be busy than underemployed, but I wouldn't mind a little bit more balance, to say nothing of job security!

Work is a vicious consumer of time, is it not? But what a silver lining, to be able to stay with the same research unit. I hear that applying for grants is effectively a full-time job in itself, so I shall send across some tea and bracing salt air to fortify you in your endeavour.

(Incidentally, we should really have that Scottish Universities Chat -- I'm seriously pondering a couple of programmes, and ought to talk to an expert! Of course, I've pretty well procrastinated on the uni front, but there's always next year if need be.)

Being able to stay with the same research unit comes with it's own challenges! But as long as they keep paying me I'm not going to complain too much. Writing grant proposals is indeed a full time job. We try to split the work between those of us that are left, but so many people have been made redundant that we're always short staffed.

I'd be very happy to talk to you about Scottish Uni's anytime! Do you already have my skype ID? If not let me know and I'll DM it to you.

Hmm, yes, I suppose it would! You seem to handle all kinds of work kerfuffles with equanimity, though; I hope this one is manageable!

Excellent! I have your skype name in my contacts -- yes. How would this weekend be for a chat?

I'm a bit up to my eyes this weekend :} Toots is competing in the National Mod on Saturday and on Sunday I've got to get some stuff ready for our annual conference which is on next week. Next weekend is good though! How does that suit you?

Aah, it looks like our schedules are not quite aligned -- this weekend is madness for me (hence my only remembering to reply today!). Family visits and work are taking up this week, but I *think* next weekend is fairly sedate. :)
