Notes: A tiny thing inspired by a comment esmerelda_t made on The Factor. The original plot bunny her comment generated was quite filthy. This is a bit more thoughtful. I'll write the filthy version another time perhaps ;)

He was a good listener. Attuned to the resonance and cadence of life aboard ship. He could judge the set of the sails or the mood of the men just by listening. But what he heard aboard Renown disturbed him.

It was the silences he noticed first. The space between words. What passed between them that was not said. Glances that spoke volumes flitting across the deck. Conversations that ended abruptly, with looks of annoyance and amusement.

And the silence that seeped at times through the thin partition of his cabin wall. That quite deliberate absence of sound rang in his ears like a broadside as William Bush lay sweating on his cot in the dark heat of the middle watch. Trying not to hear the silence. Trying not to imagine. Trying not to see the damp dark curls and blue eyes closing.

This has put a grin on my face after a particularly trying day at work.

I love how this sums up so much about Bush, and how he's nobody's fool, with so few words.

I can't believe no one's written the filthy version yet... perhaps someone has and it'll be reced. :P

Not sure I could write the filthy version tbh. I don't think I know Mr Bush well enough to indulge in filth yet! Although I have to confess I am becoming quite fascinated by the rather obvious spark between Mr Bush and Mr Kennedy. That's your fault that is ;)

I blame the wardrobe department, if they will put them in those tight white trousers then eyes will wander and conclusions will be drawn! :P

You have a point. The A&E wardrobe department certainly have a lot to answer for.

I shall now be spending the rest of the day trying not to wander off across t'internet to find pictures of aforementioned lieutenants eyeing each other up in aforementioned tight white trousers.
