This afternoon we took daughter to the panto. You have to, it's a Glasgow institution. We usually go to the Kings but this year we took toots to the SECC to see Robinson Crusoe and the Caribbean Pirates with John Barrowman and the Krankies. You probably have to be Scottish to appreciate the sheer WTF???! lunacy of that double billing.

Needless to say the whole thing was camp as mince. So camp in fact that it made Cosmo Jarvis' Gay Pirates look like Das Boot. There was lots of improvising, giggling, corpsing, innuendo and Barrowman flirting outrageously with his very statuesque Man Friday. Considering we saw the matinee, I can only imagine the depths to which the evening performances sink! Daughter had a whale of a time and was sufficiently taken in by the 3D effects to squeal and duck under her seat.

All very silly but very entertaining. Although I fear I will be haunted by the fearful image of Barrowman's red crushed velvet breeches. Eeeewwww!

We don't have panto here. I heard JB mention it in an interview once--(seems he's a fan,) and I had to look it up!

John Barrowman is a very silly man!

The breeches are horrible.

I am now imagining a X-over with Cosmo Jarvis and Das Boot. It makes me feel much better.

Yes pantomine is a peculiarly British phenomenon. I don't think it really exists anywhere else!

John Barrowman is indeed a very silly man, though I had no idea quite how silly until this afternoon! And yes, the breeches were truly awful.

Hehe! A submarine full of gay pirates?!

The Krankies are legends! Barrowman will be able to dine out on this anecdote for years in Motherwell at least

The Krankies are legends!
It has to be said, along with Mr Barrowman, they made quite a threesome! ;P

in Motherwell at least
Funnily enough, the fate of the evil pirate Captain Blackheart was to get dragged off to Paisley by a bunch of neds!

Paisley you say? Surely there's something in the Geneva Convention about that!

I once went to the Pavillion to buy panto tickets and when I asked where the box office was was told 'over there'. It was clearly behind me though, what a missed opportunity! You really cant get the staff.

See how hard panto is in Glasgow!

*groan* You should be on the stage. Or something.... ;)

*squints* He looks to me like a straight Dandini more than Robinson Crusoe.

Dare I ask who the Krankies played?

Straight???!!!! You need to get your eyes tested missy! Admittedly any resemblance to Defoe's character was purely titular!

Dare I ask who the Krankies played?
Captain Crusoe and Wee Jimmy Crusoe, Robinson's identical twin brother. Obviously. :P

Wee Jimmy Crusoe, hehehehehe that amuses me far more than it should.

It amused me far more than it should too! XD If they do another production next year we should go to one of the evening shows!

Considering Dandini and the Prince are still played by principle 'boys' in my neck of the woods I'd say Mr Barrowman looks relatively straight by panto standards.

(And those breeches would have been horribly hot and uncomfortable on stage.)

Lol! Good point!

When I was a kid I wanted to grow up to become a principal boy *sigh* I guess it was the breeches ;)

ETA Though obviously not the red crushed velvet breeches. Yeeeuch!

And those breeches would have been horribly hot and uncomfortable on stage.
Don't worry, he spent most of the second act in a striped bathing costume and pajamas with fluffy slippers.

A what????! I've never heard one called that but I think it probably was. It was certainly very demure, particularly when accessorised by the bright yellow rubber ring ;)

Wiki'd Dandini, got Italian Renaissance painter. Is confused. Wiki'd the Krankies-- pictured them in threeway clinch with poor John Barrowman. Is going to the kitchen to remove my eyes now.

There are pictures up of him playing this event. He looks so happy!

Dandini is the prince, or principal boy, in various pantomimes and as [livejournal.com profile] latin_cat pointed out, the principal boy is traditionally played by a girl in breeches. The pantomime dame on the other hand is traditionally played by a man in a frock. It's confusing I know... ;)

He certainly performs the role with brio!

I saw him in Jack and the Beanstalk in Cardiff. OMG the Dr Who jokes!

*nods* so did I. And the bit about "I've never danced with a fairy"!

I;ve seen him in panto maybe half a dozen times and each one has been both outrageous and brilliant. Glad toots liked it!

Toots had a whale of a time, though she's still not entirely convinced that John Barrowman is "real". XD

I'm not sure he's real either...

One of the pirates did actually bear more than a passing resemblance to Cosmo Jarvis, which just added to the WTF?!

I can imagine he went down a storm in Cardiff. So to speak... ;)

No, no, the WTFness is coming through pretty clear :-D
That's good to know XD

it is impossible to find any round here who still have cross dressing principal boys
Sadly "proper" principal boys seem to have died out in Glasgow, but I guess John Barrowman is the next best thing!

Okay, I'm not British, I've never heard of the Krankies until two weeks ago when they got a mention on Have I Got News For You, because they're swingers (allegedly).

The red breeches are very special indeed. Oh my.

Funnily enough that was the last time I had heard of them too before going to the panto the other day! Needless to say they were making lots of really awful jokes about swinging.

The red breeches are very special indeed.
That's certainly one way to describe them!! It's almost enough to make one defect to Team Trowser!
