Thought this might amuse [livejournal.com profile] mylodon and [livejournal.com profile] nodbear....

Partner and I usually exchange gifts at Hogmanay as well as at Christmas, this year however Hogmanay was somewhat chaotic so gifts got held over until this weekend. Amongst other things, I gave partner a copy of To The Ends Of The Earth to add to our AoS movie collection. Partner took one look at the cover, pointed to the gentleman in the middle and said "Hey look! It's George North!!" XD

Does this mean that Mr Cumberbatch has been moonlighting as a winger for Llanelli Scarlets?!

Ruddy Norah. I shall watch sherlock tonight waiting for him to nip up the line and over in the corner!

Uncanny isn't it?!

I wonder if this means that we can expect to see lots of overwrought Sherlock / Scarlets slash? :P

Leave it to me to respond on a different wave length to this. Looking at the cover art, I seem to notice a two hundred year difference in the vessel pictured and the clothing of the individuals shown. I am not familiar with the story/film, and there may be reasons for the apparent discrepancy that I am not aware of.

Hehe! Second comment partner made was "That ship's all wrong!" We haven't watched the film yet so I don't know if the ship on the cover is the one that appears in the film. I sincerely hope not otherwise they're way off! The story is supposed to be set in 1812, though I believe the ship is supposed to be old by that stage. Presumably not 200 years old though!!

Yup. And the shape of the topsails is all wrong too.

I would think there is a high likelihood of there being no resaon for the anachronstic ship /uniform thing

I am not sure if I mentioned it here on the comm but there exists a serious documentary made here in which I saw on the Tudor navy sailing in to destroy a rebuilt Spanish fleet - except that the footage though cut in an attempt to hide it- was the Indefatigable being attacked by shore batteries and then the Papillon landing that hit in the French ships powder room- presumably they sold off licnece to use sections in that way!
shouted at the screen at the time which did not endear me to my hosts :/

They do that sort of thing so much in documentaries! I guess to some folks a sailing vessel is a sailing vessel, and it doesn't matter what era one appears to be from or what era it is supposed to be in.

From the pic shown here, I'd place the ship in the 1500's or early 1600's. If there is two hundred years difference in the uniforms and ships, why didn't they have HH and the others in modern day Naval uniforms aboard ships of the 1790's/1800's?

I suspect you're right. A long as it's a boat with sails it doesn't seem to matter what period it belongs to!

That sounds like a prompt for a Hornblower AU!

goat fic

hhmmmnnn - gettinga little out of hand here

though there are things to contemplate

for instance in your icon Horatio is worrying about the Newtonian universe and time travel

and Archie has assessed a vision of Horatio in doublet and hose

and that distant thud from away to the west is [livejournal.com profile] eglantine_br fainting at the prospevt of Archies knee in similar display

I may just have to join Eglantine on the fainting couch....

sleuth/scarletts slash - shudder

but a good point about the likeness George does have cheekbones too - though his are so often muddy that direct comparison with Mr C in that- programme- we- get -fined- in Archie -pics- for -mentioning is difficult

But this is a quintessential following Sea post of the kind which I love

<navy boy frivolity, wandering thoughts on lovely young Welsh rugby players and then a discussion about the finer points of stern galleries ... Mylodon, Anteros and Dave - thank you for making me smile so much ! Meanwhile I shall commence comparison of GN and BC and bone structure...tried to think of some innuendo here for Anteros to have a go at and failed :( ps just editing to add an Archie picture anyway

Hehe! THought this might make you smile :) Of course if Sherlock / Scarlets slash isn't your thing, but BC and GN really are one and the same, perhaps we could look forward to some Amazing Grace slash instead? With GN playing Pitt the Younger and what was the name of that nice Welsh chap who played Wilberforce? ;P

Hehe

but - btw = Benedict and George separated at birth ?

not quite = the former is ( Almost) old enough to be the latters da as we say in wales

adn with Georges career he is unlikely to have as flawless a face as Mr Cumberbatch by the same age :(

however I shall provide some comparison data...

Please let me know if you'd recommend it...been looking over at Mr. Cumberbatch's CV over at IMDB and picking through movies/tv series that have a semi-objective review. Besides listening to his voice, I like to analyze Mr. Cumberbatch's acting skills (so far, in my opinion, Sherlock still takes the cake compared to The Last Enemy and Amazing Grace). ^_^

Of course I'd be happy to let you know what we think when we watch it. Don't hold your breath though, I am very bad at getting round to watching films, and worse with television!
