Haven't we met before?
Feb. 14th, 2012 10:30 amLast night partner and I watched Thor. We tend to get round to watching films about a year or so after the rest of the known world. Anyway, I was completely distracted for the first half of the film trying to figure out who Mr Hemsworth reminded me of. A quick imdb check confirmed that neither of us had ever seen him in anything ever, but he still seemed, or rather sounded, awfully familiar. Eventually partner cracked it - "He sounds just like Jack!" And it's true, he does! Thor seems to have borrowed Captain Aubrey's Aussie English accent! We both spent the rest of the film giggling and expecting Thor to start yelling nautical commands or for Stephen to appear like a bolt from the blue. Maybe it's just us...
In other news, I am currently reading
esteven's wonderful Christmas present, a beautifully bound copy of Basil Hall's Travels in India, Ceylon and Borneo. This morning on the bus to work I just about laughed myself silly reading Hall's description of trying to evade the nocturnal depredations of the mosquito. Anyone who has ever spent the night with one of the little buggers will sympathise. You can read "The Nocturnal Hunt of the Mosquito" here.
And talking of work, I'd better go and do some :}

Date: 2012-02-14 12:42 pm (UTC)I have spent night cowering and cursing and hiding from mosquitoes, just as he said. I never thought I would feel pity for them, but the idea of them rushing forward bravely, unafraid of horse-tails or towels... I found it strangely moving.
Thinking about his letters to Dickens-- I think BH may be the better writer. He is so funny. It is not 8 am here yet, and I am wide awake and giggling at the idea of him hitting himself in the ear and giving an appropriate curse! ("Gotcha, you little---") Then the despair of hearing the damn thing again. I know it well!

There is nothing, nothing, worse that hearing that dreaded whine in the middle of the night. I am a mosquito magnet and you can guarantee that even if there is only one of the little blighters for miles around, it will find me.

Agreed. I'm afraid I find DIckens utterly tedious most of the time but I adore Basil to bits!

Date: 2012-02-16 10:22 pm (UTC)ROFL! That would just have been too weird all together!
I suddenly heard "Kirk and Spock" spouting some heroic nonsense together. *g* Nobody quite understood why I was in tears...
Oh dear, I can imagine that must have been very distressing for you!
I am pleased you like the Basil Hall.
I adore Basil! He has been my companion on the bus all this week and my journeys are much the better for his company :)
