Come a long way
Mar. 6th, 2012 09:59 pmToday was my day off work so after I had finished doing some work on the conference presentation
nodbear and I are putting together, I watched Mutiny. It's ages since I've sat down and watched it start to finish and the thing that always strikes me is just how completely and utterly unintimidated Archie is. He is never afraid to step forward and speak up. If he's afraid of anything, it's what will happen to Horatio. He's come a long way from Justinian...

Date: 2012-03-06 11:25 pm (UTC)YES! It's easy to understand why he seems driven to make a stand.
And it breaks my heart a little that he still describes himself as 'a bit prone to panic'.
Oh stop it! You'll make me cry :'(
I have missed your comments, you always have such great insight into these characters :)

Date: 2012-03-06 11:44 pm (UTC)Don't blame me! It's Archie's doing! (Though I'm tempted to invoke the "BLAME SIMPSON" trend here.)
You know, I have really missed commenting too. :) (I'm flattered that you think I have insight though, given that on a normal day the extent of my analysis of fictional characters is just pretending to be them.)

Date: 2012-03-06 11:52 pm (UTC)You're right there! This is one thing we can't blame Simpson for.
Of course you have insight! Your comments always struck me as being very thoughtful and perceptive :)

Date: 2012-03-06 11:33 pm (UTC)Definitely! He may not be intimidated but he doesn't entirely have his shit together either. I think the panic has been replaced by loss of temper, he'll never be able to control his temper the way Horatio does. You can see it in the way he snaps at Bush. Criticising a senior officer may be brave but it's not particularly wise.
Whenever it looks like things are about to hit the fan the camera always pans to Archie looking at Horatio
Yep, everything he does, he does in relation to Horatio. But I think it's a two way thing, Horatio is also looking
at Archie's arseat him too.no subject

Captain Sawyer is a truly tragic figure. Hobbs is the other one that I feel more sympathy for each time I watch Mutiny and Retribution. He is genuinely devoted to his captain but I just don't think he can comprehend that he is loosing his mind and the danger that poses to them all.
As for Horatio and Archie I always drown in the eyes of the first
All those glances across the deck just kill me...
And 'Huzzah' for naked Horatio :)
Huzzah indeed! XD

That's the redemptive power of anteros, of love returned :)
(Lent is getting to me!)
Aye, you're definitely leaning!

Date: 2012-03-07 02:35 pm (UTC)However - and I haven't watched Mutiny in a while, so this is a genuine question - how much of Archie's standing up for him has Wellard noticed? He thanks Horatio for "speaking up for him" before the beating. Does he even know how outraged and outspoken Archie is on his behalf? Apart from "You call him sir!", Archie's outbursts happen when Wellard is not present, IIRC.

Date: 2012-03-07 06:30 pm (UTC)The photo also makes me feel that it would be foolish to get JB seriously angry. Actor or no, the white lips and squinty eyes have to come from somewhere. (We bring our brows down in anger to prevent injury to our eyes. So the lowered brows are a way of saying 'I am ready for a strike to the face.'

Date: 2012-03-07 06:45 pm (UTC)My ex-BF is an actor, and he's the calmest, most composed person I know (which is saying something, because I am the calmest, most composed person most of my friends know, and he's better at it than I am) - and he does angry so well on screen, it's scary. So perhaps it really is a talent - being able to create intense emotions out of thin air, without necessarily experiencing them in reality.

and this picture of Archie is so full of all kinds of resonance-
he embodies in the way Jamie matures him exactly what bravery was =and is = about I think and as is often the most admirable- it is not being fearless, unafraid of everything but going forward despite the fears we do have.
an old truism but in the story of Archie very convincingly played by Jamie...
