Today was my day off work so after I had finished doing some work on the conference presentation [livejournal.com profile] nodbear and I are putting together, I watched Mutiny. It's ages since I've sat down and watched it start to finish and the thing that always strikes me is just how completely and utterly unintimidated Archie is. He is never afraid to step forward and speak up. If he's afraid of anything, it's what will happen to Horatio. He's come a long way from Justinian...

Oh what a fierce face he has! Horatio looks quite reasonable in comparison. Archie is saying "Come on, just step forward and try it!"

Just one step closer to Horatio and there'll be trouble!

It's a similar expression to the one he has in this pic...

That's one of my favourite things about those episodes ... and especially how his previous experiences contribute to his fierce defence of his friends and make him willing to stand against injustices. The way he sticks up for Wellard is especially great.

And it breaks my heart a little that he still describes himself as 'a bit prone to panic'.

YES! It's easy to understand why he seems driven to make a stand.

And it breaks my heart a little that he still describes himself as 'a bit prone to panic'.
Oh stop it! You'll make me cry :'(

I have missed your comments, you always have such great insight into these characters :)

Don't blame me! It's Archie's doing! (Though I'm tempted to invoke the "BLAME SIMPSON" trend here.)

You know, I have really missed commenting too. :) (I'm flattered that you think I have insight though, given that on a normal day the extent of my analysis of fictional characters is just pretending to be them.)

You're right there! This is one thing we can't blame Simpson for.

Of course you have insight! Your comments always struck me as being very thoughtful and perceptive :)

Now see I've always read those episodes as Archie still having his panicky moments, he's just learned to hide them better. Whenever it looks like things are about to hit the fan the camera always pans to Archie looking at Horatio, I've always assumed that was how he'd learned to calm himself, by focusing on Horatio and how his arse looks in his breeches

Definitely! He may not be intimidated but he doesn't entirely have his shit together either. I think the panic has been replaced by loss of temper, he'll never be able to control his temper the way Horatio does. You can see it in the way he snaps at Bush. Criticising a senior officer may be brave but it's not particularly wise.

Yep, everything he does, he does in relation to Horatio. But I think it's a two way thing, Horatio is also looking at Archie's arse at him too.

Maybe it is easier for him to be brave for other people.

Absolutely. I'm quite sure he never sees himself as a brave man. I'm not even sure he ever realises that he is being brave for other people.

That's funny :) I watched the same episode today. I focused a bit more on Captain Sawyer and his doctor. It's so upsetting to see them mistreating the crew and their own officers! I really hated them :)
As for Horatio and Archie I always drown in the eyes of the first and stare at their uniforms or their pigtails. And 'Huzzah' for naked Horatio :)

Yay!

Captain Sawyer is a truly tragic figure. Hobbs is the other one that I feel more sympathy for each time I watch Mutiny and Retribution. He is genuinely devoted to his captain but I just don't think he can comprehend that he is loosing his mind and the danger that poses to them all.

All those glances across the deck just kill me...

Huzzah indeed! XD

Hobbs strikes me as a good man with misplaced devotion. The corrupting power of love/respect vs the rendeptive, life changing power of love as shown by its effects on Archie.

(Lent is getting to me!)

Somebody once wrote a really good story about a young Captain Sawyer and a baby-Hobbes. It posited that Sawyer had looked out for young Hobbes. It was very sweet and sad. Little bitty Hobbs was in a battle where he hid and bashed people on the feet. Do you guys remember it-- I am ashamed to say I don't remember who wrote it.

I like the scene where he informs Sawyer that Mr Wellard was busy because he had asked him to be so. You can see how he's bracing himself before he speaks up, but he doesn't seem particularly scared.

However - and I haven't watched Mutiny in a while, so this is a genuine question - how much of Archie's standing up for him has Wellard noticed? He thanks Horatio for "speaking up for him" before the beating. Does he even know how outraged and outspoken Archie is on his behalf? Apart from "You call him sir!", Archie's outbursts happen when Wellard is not present, IIRC.

I think that Wellard was equally aware of Archie's concern for him -- the way he phrases his intent not to let either of them be blamed for pushing Sawyer suggests it. I would have to stick the DVD in again to get the exact quotes -- it's been at least a week, what's happening to my memory? ;-) but I get the sense he knows.

I'm still planning to watch Hornblower with some friends who have never seen it before. I'm very much looking forward to their commentaries.

Well, they've got oh-so-slightly altered names, as I'm hoping to do it as profic... but yeah, the grown-ups, in contrast to the young sweethearts. Once I reminded myself that all my LKU stuff was NOT actually canon, it started to look doable.

They're very protective of the young sweethearts. They know just how rare something like that is.

Also he does not/cannot know how being beaten resonates with Archie, as it does not with Horatio in the same way. I want to think that he thanked Archie in some scene we don't see.

A lot of Archie and Wellard's relationship has happened off-screen, certainly. They're so comfortable with each other from their very first scene together (i.e. making fun of Bush), but I don't know that Wellard has actually seen Archie speaking up for him. And I am sure that he doesn't know why the beatings resonate with Archie, because Archie has never told anyone (with the exception of Horatio, in fanfiction).

Oh, Archie...

The photo also makes me feel that it would be foolish to get JB seriously angry. Actor or no, the white lips and squinty eyes have to come from somewhere. (We bring our brows down in anger to prevent injury to our eyes. So the lowered brows are a way of saying 'I am ready for a strike to the face.'

He does do angry very well in Law & Order, too.

My ex-BF is an actor, and he's the calmest, most composed person I know (which is saying something, because I am the calmest, most composed person most of my friends know, and he's better at it than I am) - and he does angry so well on screen, it's scary. So perhaps it really is a talent - being able to create intense emotions out of thin air, without necessarily experiencing them in reality.

Quick fly by comment...Yes love that scene where Archie speaks up for Wellard, he doesn't give any indication that he's afraid of Sawyer at all. And I agree that Wellard really is quite oblivious to Archie's outrage.

Hoping to be supportive presence while here in the slightly crazy work situation

certainly not hoping to cause scarcity on LJ though :0

and this picture of Archie is so full of all kinds of resonance-

he embodies in the way Jamie matures him exactly what bravery was =and is = about I think and as is often the most admirable- it is not being fearless, unafraid of everything but going forward despite the fears we do have.

an old truism but in the story of Archie very convincingly played by Jamie...

I have Jamie and Ioan to thank, for giving me something to think of when I am afraid.

I suppose a purist would say I should thank Forrester, but while I love the books, the actors brought it alive for me.

Wonder what J and I would think if they knew? Would they be like-- 'silly women, we are actors,' or would they perhaps understand the power of fiction better than that?

All the beings I have fallen for in the past this way came from books entirely. They did not have a real human in between me and the one in my mind.
