Right out of the blue, a cousin of mine sent me this photograph at the weekend. It's my father and his younger brother as children. I love the way they're laughing, and I love that they're in a boat. It might even be the same boat that was still there when we were kids!

Btw the picture in the icon was taken outside the house where this photograph was probably taken.

I love the colours, it's almost sepia but not quite.

The colours are lovely aren't they? I've no idea if this was originally a colour photograph or whether it's been hand tinted or digitally altered.

Could they be more adorable? Little boys!! Wonder what they were laughing at?

This photo is a good piece of art too-- the legs the way the dark haired boy is leaning a little, and the way that the blond has his head back. I love the little legs, and the little socks.

There is something so timeless about the picture-- I mean they are specific to your family, but they could be any boys, ever.apt

They could be Archie and his brother, or Captain Keene and Dr H.

Yes that's one of the reasons I love this so much. There's something universal about the image of two small boys laughing in a boat! They're instantly recognisable in a way. Although I confess I'm not actually sure which one is my father!

I'm not one for keeping photographs of family members on display but I'm quite tempted to print this and frame it.

SO CUTE. is it a hand-tinted print? We've got a few of those in the collection.

I have no idea! It does rather look like it's hand tinted but I really don't know anything about this picture. I think this must have been taken round about 1938 or thereabouts though.

It looks very artistic. It could go straight into an exhibition and win prizes.

It's a lovely photograph isn't it? I have no idea who took it. Possibly one of my grandparents, possibly a great uncle home from sea! I think I mat have to print a frame a copy :)

If it's the same boat we had when I was a kid then it was pretty big for a rowing boat!

I hope so! I haven't had a chance to show this to her yet, I wonder what she'll make of these little boys?

That's such a lovely carefree photo! It's striking because it's so clearly from years ago, but I can remember sitting like that with my cousin when we were kids, in our decrepit rowboat -- some things are timeless ...

All kids should have a rowing boat to muck about in :)

some things are timeless
So true. That's what I really love about this picture.
