I really have no words for this other than W.T.F??!

Another gem from Dudley Jarrett's British Naval Dress. And yes, this is an "Official Admiralty Photograph" from 1954. Where in heaven's name did these official Admiralty photographs come from? Navyboys Magazine?!

Hm... Looking at his trousers, they wanted to tell he was a midshipman and still growing up...

Is he supposed to be a flasher?

Yes. I believe he is a Flasher, First Class XD

Actually this is a picture of a "Rating showing raincoat with detachable lining, and jersey worn beneath jumper."

Layering is so in this season ;)

Nope. He was told "Remember to present the label, lad! Just feign a gust of wind or something. A very precise gust."

Perhaps it's a new form of signalling?

That was actually my guess - that they wanted to show the button-out lining. It may have been notable to me because the current German army officer's greatcoat that I used as the base for my Captain Jack Harkness cosplay coat has a button-out lining, which I find very convenient. Warm linings are great for winter outdoors. They are sub-optimal for hotels indoors.

I would have loved to have a real WWII RAF greatcoat. Those are an order of magnitude more expensive than my surplus-store German one. And Jack's coat did look blue in certain lights. So I just swapped out the buttons and bought epaulettes, and put on the stripes.

I like to think it worked!

Ha! Any excuse... ;)

I can just imagine Captain Jack flashing in a coat like that! Next time you wear yours you must take an action shot :P

I am fully clothed -- trousers, blue shirt open at collar to show vest, dark red braces, The Coat. The coat's open, and in fact I twirled some to get it to act windblown, but there is no indecent exposure. It was January!

You have a Capt. Harkness coat? I'm trying rather hard not to be jealous... I've wanted one for ever. ;)

Those trousers look like a safety hazard to me. They're positively voluminous!

He's very slim, isn't he? I like the trousers. I wish we could see Horatio in this uniform, it'd be most fetching.

Positively willowy! I wonder if he's the same chap that modelled the rather fetching zip-fronted jumper?

I like the trousers. I wish we could see Horatio in this uniform, it'd be most fetching.
Mmmmm...there's a thought. Do you think Horatio could master that inscrutable expression though?

Horatio would just have to look gloomy, he could manage that.

I do approve of the willowiness of the Admiralty's models.

Clearly, he's being kept in the captain's cabin at all times. Tucked in all safe and secure.

No. The Admiralty abolished feet in 1950 as you can see from this 1951 picture of Women's Royal Naval Service mess dress.

That's one way to describe it! XD

Your wish is my command...

First class petty officer 1896. Caption as follows: "Frocks tucked into the top of the trousers were finally abolished in 1906."

Now ask yourself, why in heaven's name would the Admiralty abolish tucking in your jersey? Didn't they have more important things to worry about in 1906?!

Either that or he is balancing a fruit bowl on his head!

Actually m'dear, that is a sennet hat and apparently they "finally disappeared" in 1921!

A fruit bowl hat could be very practical. Sailors could snack as they worked, and throw the fruit at the enemy too!
