Today we went to the Rugby Sevens World Series, one leg of which took place in Glasgow this year. New Zealand beat England in the final and daughter cheered for Wales and USA because that's where [livejournal.com profile] nodbear and [livejournal.com profile] eglantine_br are from :) Sadly neither won their tiers but USA put on a better show.

Highlights of the day included:

* The Kenyans who were really classy and played like France at their very best.
* The Russians who were kinda mad and highly entertaining.
* England's eye watering lilac change strip.
* The Argentinians' chi chi pink boots.
* Russia's 5'5" Alexander Yanyuskin squaring up to a French player over a foot taller than him and twice as broad.
* The Australian number 9 who looked uncannily like Henry Rollins.
* The Kiwis' frankly awesome thighs.
* The crew of fabulous pirates in the party stand :)

All in all it was a grand day out!

How wonderful. I think I may need to learn more about rugby. Smiling to think of your girl cheering. A fun way to learn her geography.

I am ashamed to say I did not even know that the USA had a rugby team. Glad they were able to go to the party...

They play in all the sevens tournaments and have been to the Rugby World Cup often Their official site is here: http://www.usarugby.org/

They are the reigning Olympic rugby champions! http://rugby-pioneers.blogs.com/rugby/2011/12/olympic-games-1924-naked-rugby-player.html

Ignore that 'naked' bit in the link. entirely work safe.

I note that "the first referee to send off a player in international rugby" was a Welshman! :D

I suppose we are unlikely to find the 1924 team naked. Kind of too bad, really.

Yes it is! Australia played first and she asked "Is that where [livejournal.com profile] eglantine_br is from?" So I told her no, you were form America which is on the other side of the world :) When USA were beaten she turned round and said "Oh dear, [livejournal.com profile] eglantine_br won't be very pleased!" XD

We kept trying to spot you.

Those England shirts are hideous - where have the lovely sunburst ones gone?

Ooh did you watch it?! We were in the very back row of the North stand, you wouldn't have been able to see us :( Did you see the pirates? They were awesome!

It's the matching lilac socks that do it! I decided to cheer for England just because they had the nerve to wear such ludicrous strips! XD

We dipped in and out over the two days, mainly for the England matches.

Don't remember pirates. Mexican bandits and Morris Dancing outiftted ladies...
