So yesterday lunch time I went to the nearest second hand book shop to my office, the splendid Britannia Panoptican Charity Shop, to see if I could pick up any CSF. I was a bit disappointed that the only edition they seemed to have was a rather dull 1954 Reprints Society hardback of Lieutenant Hornblower that was missing its dustjacket. I decided to get it anyway so I took it to the desk and asked if they had any more. "Oh aye" said the guy "I've got a whole box of that stuff downstairs". So I spent the rest of my lunch hour digging through a box full of dusty Bolitho, Ramage and Fox paperbacks (who are these guys??) and the entire Polldark series, and uncovered the following...

Pan Books, 1974 edition.
There's no other word for it, this one is just camp.

Penguin Books, Peacock 1969 edition.
This is in really poor condition but it has
line drawn illustrations. What can I say?
I'm a sucker for line drawings.

How could you not love this?

Penguin Books, 1975 editions.
I'm guessing these are the editions [livejournal.com profile] thehappyreturn was referring to.
They are indeed very lovely. Think I shall have to hunt down some more of these.

I couldn't get a copy of Mr Midshipman Hornblower so I've ordered a copy from Green Metropolis books. It's a 1969 paperback but I don't know which publisher. Hope it arrives soon!

Drattit. Don't suppose one of those Ramage novels was Ramage's Devil? Been trying to get that one for... seems like ages.

I honestly couldn't tell you! But I could go back and have a look next week if you like?

Please.

(And if they've got Ramage, get it for yourself... he mentions Hornblower by name... :D )

"I've got a whole box of that stuff downstairs"

That stuff= music to my ears. Oh the joy of a bookshop like that. I miss that like crazy.

I'm ashamed to say I have all of these except the first. :D Though I ruined my two copies of the Penguin 1975 editions (yes they were the ones I was talking about!), good on you for finding beautiful copies!

They also had an original Argosy compendium but sadly it had no CSF in it. I've already picked up some beautiful books in this shop so I was rather chuffed with this haul!

Lol! Okay, time for you to fess up, how many CSF books do you own?

I was delighted to find the 1975 penguins. I'll definitely be looking for more!
