...Admiral Sir William Sidney Smith, the man who made Napoleon "miss his destiny", was born on the 21st June 1764. I'm not even going to attempt to summarise Smith's naval career with was completely mad even by 18th / 19th century RN standards! You can read Smith's story for yourself at his wikipedia entry here.

Sir Sidney Smith at Acre

"This way to the fleshpots!"*

*Apologies for the Crusading joke. Clearly I have spent too much time hanging out with the one woman Plantagenet fandom that is [livejournal.com profile] esmerelda_t ;)

Wonder if the peaches were still ripe in the fleshpots by the 19thC?

Also, I think you and toots should this weekend stage a demo outside Clattypats demanding they change their name to fleshpots!

Sir Sid looks like the kind of man who would appreciate a nice peach!

I must admit, "Clattypats Westend Fleshpot" has a certain ring to it.

The guy with a red turban looks like saying "But... could we get our pay first?"

Sidney 'stretchy pants' Smith. He and 'Mainmast' Pellew must have cut a swath down the street together.

ROFL! What a sight for sore eyes!

You need to ask [livejournal.com profile] nodbear about the letter from Sid to Ned addressed to "Dear brother knight..."

He does look quite swank. And polite--he seems to be gesturing as if to say "You first."

Very swanky indeed! "Flesh pots this way. After you, my good sir!"
