On Friday I am off on holiday for a fortnight. I can't say it's come too soon, work has been monumentally shite since the end of February and will only get more so when I get back. Meh, whatever. In the meantime we are off up to the Outer Hebrides to visit my sister for a week. We're a bit too early to catch the Hebridean Celtic Festival but the Maritime Festival is on so if I'm feeling brave I might drag sister out for a sailing lesson :}

For the second week of our holiday we've hired a cruiser and will be sailing down the Caledonian Canal from Inverness to Fort William, via Loch Ness, Loch Oich and Loch Lochy. Partner and I have done this before and it was great fun despite the fact that our miniscule boat had no keel and no rudder and was steered by an outboard propellor which meant you had to keep your hand on the tiller the entire time. It was also infinitely easier to manoeuvre going backwards than forwards, which made getting in and out of locks a bit of a challenge.

Our last boat, berthed under Urquhart Castle on Loch Ness

This time we are going with two friends and three kids and we will have a much bigger boat. Somehow I have been awarded the rank of purser. Not sure how that happened but I have been told I am in charge of the booze. This may or may not be a good idea...

If anyone would like a postcard, and I don't already have your address, DM me.

You need Horatio there to work the tiller! And you, and partner and Horatio can all lie down with feet in the air, as detailed in book. (Of course, you would then have Maria, looking left out and dejected!) But maybe you, in function as purser could get Maria drunk!

(I wonder if Horatio knows the quartermaster song? I wonder how snozzled he would have to be to sing it?

I am sure you will have a wonderful time. Messing about in boats...

Who's the captain then? Have you warned them to beware of open hatches?

The captain will be fine, there will be no trip hazards aboard, like small overweight spaniels.

Wait a minute, you're going to sail the boat yourself and have done this before?! Does any of you have a license or don't you need one for this??? I feel a plan forming in my head… :D

Yeah. It's mad. They just give you a boat and off you go! No license required. Crazy buggers! This is the boat hire company if you ever fancy giving it a go: Caley Cruisers.
