I am back on the mainland. Terra firma! Ferry was a bit rough again and poor toots was sick as a green midshipman at Spithead. Poor thing.

Our visit to the Hebrides was lovely though I was a bit sorry we had to leave just as the Heb Celt Festival was starting, and birthday was a bit meh tbh. Never mind, onwards and upwards! Next stop the Caledonian Canal to pick up our boat :D

Meanwhile, here's Stornoway looking unusually pictureskew.

How I wish you and your family would have had the chance to stay longer to see and participate in what the festival had to offer.

I hope, the little one is better now after another unruly crossing.

All my best wishes on your birthday again. I hope there will be some sort of celebration, maybe even seeing dear nodbear again?

Perhaps we'll stay for the festival next year. I've been a couple of times before in the past but I think daughter is old enough to enjoy it now. She loves big noisy crowds!

I'm hoping to visit dear Nod in August if I can, but my job is so up in the air in at the moment that it's impossible to plan anything ahead :/

I will definitely cross my fingers for your job.

When you see her, please give my regards. It was a long time since I heard (or read) from her and I was getting worried. I had a card recently from her, so I guess she is well.

I will be speaking to [livejournal.com profile] nodbear tomorrow so I will be most happy to pass on your kind regards. She has been entertaining [livejournal.com profile] amaraal recently and has also been busy tracking down our dear Indy boys :)

The card I had was from her and amaraal :D I sent her a mail yesterday and I find dear nodbear has replied this morning. She was lucky to get to Buckler's Hard where they mothballed the model of the Indy *is outraged*

You're not the only one to be outraged! Apparently when Nod first called the museum to ask if the Indy model was still on display, the person she spoke to have never head of the ship! *fumes*

*shakes head and starts to take a dislike to Nelson*

I hope my photos will not be the only indication left that there was an Indy model.
*sighs*
I hope Nod will find out more at some stage.

*nods* How many more Nelson exhibitions do we need?

I hope my photos will not be the only indication left that there was an Indy model.
Hang on to them just in case! We're going to contact the curator to see if they can point us to any relevant archives they might still have on the dear old Indy.

I have nothing against his lordship, but there were a good number of other very good captains etc around. They may not have been quite as flamboyant as Nelson, but without them England would have had greater difficulties beating off Bonaparte. So this complete focussing on Nelson gives people the wrong idea and does history a disservice. *grumbles*

Oh, I have no intention of getting rid of the photos, I am only sorry I did not take more and photographed the model from every angle. I would not have thought that anyone could be so stupid of getting rid of the model. Please keep my posted of your findings.

Yes. I couldn't agree more. Ditto Wellington. Unquestionably brilliant, but again he has overshadowed the achievements of others.

At least Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher gets a mention now and then. ;D

Happy belated birthday! Perhaps you can dedicate the weekend to having all the birthday fun that was your due!

All these pictures you post make me want to visit Scotland again. That's where I learned fishing, you know!

I used to do a lot of fishing when I was a kid but I haven't lifted a rod for years. I don't even know if I could cast a line now!

And yes, I managed to catch up with birthday fun last week :)

I still don't understand why Stornoway looks like Martha's Vineyard. Are you sure you have not gone to Menemsha?

Date: 2012-07-22 11:18 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] anteros-lmc.livejournal.com
Hehe! I've just googled Menemsha and I see what you mean! To be honest it's not often you see Stornoway looking like this. It's usually raining! :}

Ahhh, lovely! Sunshine is one thing I did not see much of when I was in Scotland. ;) Why was birthday meh? Because there's not much going on in Stornoway?

From: [identity profile] anteros-lmc.livejournal.com
Heh, it's not something I've seen much of in Scotland either and I've lived here fro voer 40 years! XD

Birthday was a bit meh because silly partner had my birthday presents sent to the wrong address so they didn't turn up. It's an easy enough mistake to make but he was so mortified that he was miserable for the rest of the day!

That's so silly of him! Being miserable, I mean. But did you get your presents in the end? Or are they lost forever?

Boys, y'know... ;)

Pressies got redirected to our home address so I'm now enjoying an extended birthday.

Sorry that toots poorly again - it is in the best naval tradition tell her !
Hope you all enjoy your Caledonian Canal visit- you realise it features in a plan called
" Caledonian Canal,or inland navigation between the eastern and western sea capable of admitting a frigate of 32 guns "

drawn and surveyed by Thomas Telford maker of the canal - and, yes, also one John McKerlie RN .....

Feel close to one particular darling Indyboy of the class of 1797 on this trip therefore :):D

and you will also like to know that one of the guides on HMS Warrior asked me " I don't suppose you will have heard of HMS Vernon? "---(*G*)

From: [identity profile] anteros-lmc.livejournal.com
I'd love to see McKerlie's survey of the canal. Was it part of the same survey we've looked at before?

"I don't suppose you will have heard of HMS Vernon? "
Priceless! Did you tell the guide you were intimately acquainted with Vernon's captain?!
