Prisoners and Ships
Sep. 27th, 2012 11:49 pmFollowing on from the Marine Sale at Bonhams,
eglantine_br and I were talking again about the beautiful ship models made by French prisoners of war. Every time I see these exquisite models they make me think of all the accounts I've read by Napoleonic prisoners, how desperately they longed to get back to their ships, and the risks they took to reach them. And for obvious reasons, they also remind me of this picture.

This is actually a screen cap from a random fanvid that caught my eye some time ago, but I'm very fond of it.

One of the things that the Hornblower movies, more than the books, did was to bring alive the experiences of the real men. Thanks to the actors, we can honor that long ago courage, we can remember the otherwise forgotten.
Of course you and Nod have done all that research, and shared so much with us all, but for me at least, it started with the visual experience.

Yes definitely! I'm afraid I find Foresters characterisation of the secondary characters a bit flat and one dimensional. I think the series, and of course the actors, brought them to life much more vividly.

Me too :)
