Following on from the Marine Sale at Bonhams, [livejournal.com profile] eglantine_br and I were talking again about the beautiful ship models made by French prisoners of war. Every time I see these exquisite models they make me think of all the accounts I've read by Napoleonic prisoners, how desperately they longed to get back to their ships, and the risks they took to reach them. And for obvious reasons, they also remind me of this picture.

This is actually a screen cap from a random fanvid that caught my eye some time ago, but I'm very fond of it.

Oh, my heart.look at him there...

It makes me think of the way I imagined him, shivering with fever in the bottom of the little boat, dreaming of his mother...

One of the things that the Hornblower movies, more than the books, did was to bring alive the experiences of the real men. Thanks to the actors, we can honor that long ago courage, we can remember the otherwise forgotten.

Of course you and Nod have done all that research, and shared so much with us all, but for me at least, it started with the visual experience.

Yes, that's the point I started writing from. It was the thought of him wakening up in the bottom of that boat that spurred me to write in the first place. Who'd have thought where that would lead!

Yes definitely! I'm afraid I find Foresters characterisation of the secondary characters a bit flat and one dimensional. I think the series, and of course the actors, brought them to life much more vividly.

Me too :)

Not that I have ever been a POW, but I feel this way all winter.

Having seen your gorgeous pictures, I'm not surprised you spend all winter longing to get back to your boat! I hope your winter accommodations are rather more salubrious than Archie's though :}

Archie is making his 'I cannot believe it' face. It is actually a very JB face too.

I love that icon. I don't know why Mr Bush is making that face, but it makes me want to hug him even more than usual!
