The winners of National Historic Ships UK's annual photography competition (remember the one that recommended you have your own photography boat? ;) were announced last week and several of the pictures I really liked won or were commended in their categories, including City of Adelaide, The Fastnet Rock and Rope on a boat. I'm not sure I would have picked out the overall winner though. What do you think?

I liked some of the others better. This one is ok. I can see the feeling that they were trying to go for, I guess.

This one strikes me as being rather obviously "arty". Perhaps I'm just a philistine, but I prefer some of the others.

I think you are right. For instance, your icon above is better, I think.

Awww thank you sweetie! Maybe one of these years I'll buy my own photography boat and enter the competition ;)

Hmph... I like the rope one better. And then I'm not really a fan of black and white. I wouldn't change with the jurors either. Maybe I would throw a coin :)(...or a brass button...)

I rather like black and white photography, but this one just strikes me as being a bit...miserable.

I love b/w because often it brings more tension to a photo, much better than colour would. I feel even THE ROPE PHOTO would have benefitted from b/w.

The winning photo looks just a tad too contrived for me, more a drawing than a photo *shrugs*

Yes I think you're right. I find this picture rather too obviously "atmospheric". Technically it's very good, but it doesn't move me the way some of the others do.

It would have been great with a tad less atmosphere. *g*

I can just imagine someone standing behind the photographer yelling "Turn down the atmosphere!!" XD

I agree. "Scorpio" looks like a well executed charcoal or pen and ink sketch to me.

My thoughts entirely. Had this been a competition for navally inclined drawings it would have received my vote. :)

Oh, they are all soooooo beautiful and impressive!! It's very difficult to say which one is my favorite, but I like "Rope on a boat" and "The Grave Yard of Anchors" :)

They're lovely aren't they? "Rope on a boat" is one of my favourites too. It's so simple but so beautiful.
