Remember the pictures of the land ship I posted recently? Well it turns out that the US Navy had one too! USS Recruit was built in Union Square, Manhattan in 1917 and was used as a recruiting centre and training ship. She also seems to have been used for dancing classes ;)

Landship Recruit

Waltzing sailors are fair enough, but I'm a little concerned about what that guy is doing with the goat... They seem to have recruited quite a menagerie in fact!

You can see some more pictures of Landship Recruit on the fabulous Retronaut site here.

I bet that goat was having a great time. Goats love a crowd. Are goats associated with the Royal Navy? The goat is our Naval animal.

We have many a regimental goat. http://www.bbc.co.uk/wales/justthejob/takeitfromme/star_shenkin.shtml

And they used to have goats on ships (for the milk). There's a story in one of the Aubrey books about a bloke and a goat.

I seem to recall that Basil Hall had some highly entertaining stories about naval goats too.

PS Have a look at the lovely fellow below ;)

Goats love a crowd? How about that! I am sadly unfamiliar with goats, we only had sheeps growing up :)

[livejournal.com profile] charliecochrane beat me to it with the story about the splendid Welsh Regimental Goat. He is very famous you know! However look at this guy, a proper naval goat! This splendid chap was the ship's mascot of HMS Venerable and the picture was taken in the Dardanelles in 1905. And guess what this beautiful billy is called? Jamie :)

the USN had a second USS Recruit. It was a similar mock up of a destroyer escort (frigate) at San Diego's Recruit Training Center. It had class rooms in the hull and topsides configured like a typical destroyer or escort destroyer of late WWII or Cold War era. I remember standing watch on board while in boot camp.

I wondered if there were other training ships like this and if you knew of any of them. Did you have dancing and goats in San Diego too? :)

I think they may have had one like that at Great Lakes too, long ago.
