Politeness and Prurience

I sooo want to go to this conference! If the conference abstract is anything to go by, I suspect the papers will be rather heavy on the old critical theory discourse, but I bet they'll be a lot of fun too :)

Oh, it does look fun. Can you go?

i like the girl in the painting--but it looks like she has a party streamer on her head! (And I knew they were into hats back then, but surely she is not trying to stay warm with her hat?!

I'll have to wait and see whether I can go, I have no idea what I'll be doing work-wise by next September. I hope I can go though!

but surely she is not trying to stay warm with her hat?!
Never mind her hat! If she doesn't put her vest on she'll catch her death!

Is there anything to stop you from going? It looks fabulous, I wish I could go. Why didn't I become a scholar?!

Childcare, funds and work (or possible lack thereof) in that order! :} I live in hope though!

Why didn't I become a scholar?!
Heh, I've worked in academia most of my life but somehow the really interesting conferences always seem to be in subjects I don't work in. Poo!

And which is easier to reach from London?
I's six and half a dozen, no real difference at all!

Anyway, I AM serious. :)))))))))))))))
Yay! Sadly I have no idea what I'll be doing next September as my job is very precarious right now. It would be great if we could make this happen though! :D

*crosses fingers for job*

I should like that of all things. :)

Let's talk about it nearer the time.

Please do cross everything. The university sector here is being decimated. Not a good place to work right now at all :/

Never mind, onwards and upwards! Lets see if we can plan something nearer the time. I also wondered if dear [livejournal.com profile] latin_cat might be interested in this?

What's a long century? A couple more decades than a regular century?! Bartholomew says this is why people think arts graduates can't count. Then gave me a look. Cheeky little bugger.

You're asking me?! I'm a prehistorian remember, I count in millennia not centuries! XD And you can tell Master Bartholomew if he doesn't mind his manners he'll be on hard tack till Christmas!

He wants to know if hard tack is a brand of caviar.

Basically they count the eighteenth century as running, conceptually, right up to Victoria's reign. I don't remember if they start it a little earlier. But it's about cultural patterns. Guess who's been studying the Georgians, however informally?

Well I can't promise that I'll get to go, but if I do, I can promise I'll come back with one or two notes!
