If there's been a theme to this year's Christmas it has undoubtedly been....rum :} Partner bought me a miniature of The Black Tot, the last consignment of Royal Naval rum that I posted about earlier in the year, and my BFF got me a bottle of Sailor Jerry rum and two very extravagant (and huge!) hand blown cocktail glasses. It would have been rude not to christen the glasses so we spent Christmas evening making rum cocktails and playing whist with BFF and her husband. Hornblower would have been proud of us :) Due to lack of obscure ingredients we ended up inventing our own cocktail, so BFF insisted on giving it a name and suggested calling it after "that ship you're writing about". And so The Indy cocktail was born and here for the record is the recipe!

Black Tot and Sailor Jerry
~~The Indy~~

2.5 parts Sailor Jerry
1 part Cointreau
1 part lime juice
0.5 parts Amaretto

Shake with ice and garnish with a twist of orange peel. Enjoy!

Be warned, these things have quite a kick. I was a bit fuzzy round the edges this morning :} In order to work off the fuzziness we went to see John Barrowman strutting his stuff in the panto. He was fabulous as always but was very nearly upstaged by a very beautiful and very clever performing horse!

Hope you all had a lovely Christmas and a thoroughly lazy boxing day!

Over the summer the USS Constitution Museum has some sort of contest for a rum based cocktail. If I find it again, I'll pass it along. Museum's web-site is at www.ussconstitutionmuseum.org, I believe. If that doesn't work, I have a link on my web-site, www.stoneislandseastories.com

Here's a more direct URL for the Rum Cocktail at the Constitution's museum. It's called a 44 gun Frigate.

Sorry, I can't actually link it. Once there, scroll down the page a ways.

I really don't need this kind of encouragement you know.... ;)

The 44 Gun Frigate sounds awesome! Could there possibly be a more perfect counterpart to The Indy?! Thank you for looking this out :) I will have to check with BFF to see if she has any of the ingredients, otherwise I will have to go and hunt them down myself!

I'd have to run to the store for ingredients for either The INDY or the 44 Gun Frigate. I do have the rum, although probably not the specific variety(s) called for. A little ice, a little Cola or whatever, and I'm good. Three water grog, anyone?

I can highly recommend it! Any orange flavoured spirit or liqueur would do the trick.

The glasses are beautiful, and I love how you have a fitting icon! :-D

The glasses are very beautiful and outrageously huge for cocktail glasses. And of course I have a fitting icon, I take my drinking very seriously I'll have you know!

Hope you're feeling better and will be right as rain for your travels on Friday.

That cocktail sounds delicious! I wonder if it would taste as good with Licor 43 as it does with Cointreau.

And huzzah for John Barrowman! I saw him in 'La Cage Aux Folles' a couple of years ago, during which my male BFF lost both his man-kissing and his drag-kissing virginity. Good times! :P

The cocktail is very delicious. I can highly recommend giving it a go! I'm sure it would work very well with Licor 43. Am I right in thinking that's less sweet than Cointreau? If so you might want to reduce the lime juice or add more Amaretto or simple syrup. And of course if you do try making this with Licor 43 then you will have invented another new cocktail and therefore will be able to choose your own name for it! A suitably nautical one of course *g*

And huzzah for John Barrowman!
Huzzah indeed! For Mr Barrowman and for man-kissing ;) This is the second year running we've seen him in panto. Daughter is a big fan, though she keep asking if he's "real" XD

It certainly sounds delicious!

Licor 43 tastes like something between orange and vanilla, which I think would go rather well with the Amaretto. Having said that, perhaps it tastes even slightly sweeter than Cointreau, so perhaps I need to add even more lime (or lemon) juice than you did. Or maybe even fresh grapefruit juice. Hmm...

I might even call it 'The Hornblower'. I reckon that's pretty much the sound that should be avoided after one too many of these. ;-)

John is brilliant. We don't have a tradition of panto over here, but I'm certain John is the perfect person to star in it! And your daughter sounds absolutely adorable. :-)

Mmmm....sounds good! The Hornblower - what could be more perfect?! If you do make it, be sure to post the recipe to [livejournal.com profile] following_sea :)

British pantomime seems to be a strangely unique theatrical style. It's very, very silly and very, very entertaining. I can highly recommend seeing one if you ever have a chance!
