Edward set his mug down while the other shearers were still drinking, and walked towards Linda, rolling up his sleeves to his elbows. She saw flashes of colour on his forearms, which resolved on the right into a bird, a cartoon-style shooting-star, and the edge of what might be some sort of insignia disappearing under his sleeve. On his left arm were cartoon women with impossibly exaggerated curves: one a blonde dressed in army khakis, the other a redhead in a nurse's uniform.
Not a problem. Edward's a fun character to write, and I had an interesting time figuring out his tattoos.
I also wrote a 'Young Edward' snippet on my LJ yesterday, back when he'd just finished at Sandhurst and was preparing to be posted overseas (and get proposed to by Julia, although he didn't know that part).
I did lots of research online and got some good info from someone who used to be a Hollywood tattoo artist. The biggest issue was working out how some of his fancier pieces could have been created at the timepoints I was thinking of (in the end I went with John Drake's theory of historical fiction for one of them: if a technique is documented as being used at a particular point, there's no reason someone else might not have been experimenting quietly with something similar a couple of years earlier).
Writing character backstory is fun. I hope you like the snippet if you get a chance to read it.

I'll remember that!
