They've been having a bit of weather up at home in the Outer Hebrides recently. In an average year, there are more gale force winds recorded in the Hebrides than any other place in the UK, and one of the stormiest places in the islands is the Butt of Lewis (no sniggering at the back there). They've already recorded wind speeds of 108 miles per hour this year, and a top gust speed of 113 mph. The pictures below aren't mine, they were taken a fortnight ago by the owners of a tearoom near the lighthouse. The cliffs in the picture below are about 60 feet high and the lighthouse, built by David Stevenson in 1869, is 120 feet which gives you some idea of the height of the waves below :}

It's amazing isn't it? I have a friend who lives up here, it's really bleak but stunningly beautiful.

Beautiful, but I feel cold just looking at it.
Interesting because the weather here has also been on the wild side. A cold and snowy winter like we had back in the 70s.

Aye it's usually a bit cold up there :} We very rarely get snow or hard frosts in the Hebrides but with the wind chill it can feel absolutely baltic!

They're stunning aren't they. It's worth following them on facebook here, they also post some amazing pics of the aurora borealis. And cakes. They aslo have lots of pictures of cakes :)

Definitely. Some visitors complain about the weather in the Hebrides, but you really have to see the islands in the teeth of a howling gale to appreciate their full beauty.

Definitely not. Now you know why I am purely an armchair sailor ;)

You get the most extraordinary light up there in the Hebrides. It's hardly surprising that the islands attract so many artists and photographers.

This is spectacular! I love rough coasts in "bad" weather. I'd take them over turquoise lagoons and sunny beaches any day.

At my home, the wind blows down hard from the hills every day and makes running a real pain, but we don't get any impressive waves or nice spray to show for it. :/

Well you certainly get plenty of rough weather and deserted windswept beaches up in the Outer Hebrides! You should go and visit, you'd love it out there :)

Do they just have some crazy-ass fetch? How far is the wind blowing from?

Crazy-ass fetch? *dies laughing* Yep, I guess you could all it that! From the west the wind is blowing all the way from you. There is nothing between the Outer Hebrides and the East Coast of the US but the Atlantic. And northwards there is only Iceland and Greenland. I guess you'd call that a crazy-ass fetch :)
