Am I missing something?? Immediately prior to the battle with the Spanish prisoners on Renown CSF treats us to a rather memorable description of Mr Bush retiring for the night. (I'm sure I'm not the only one who noticed this ;)

He threw off his outer clothes, and standing in his shirt he cast a final look round his cabin before putting out the light. Shoes and trousers were on the sea-chest ready to be put on at a moment's notice in the event of an emergency. Sword and pistols were in their beckets against the bulkhead....Then he dropped upon the cot, lying on his back with his arms and legs spread wide so as to allow the sweat every chance to evaporate, and he closed his eyes.
Later Bush is woken by the noise of the fighting:

Now there was another rush of feet, and wild shouting, which brought Bush off his cot in a flash. He tore open his cabin door, and as he did so he heard the bang of a musket which left him in no doubt as to what was happening. He turned back and grabbed for sword and pistol,
Take note: sword and pistol. No mention of the carefully laid out shoes and trousers. In fact CSF goes on to mention Bush's bare feet sliding in the blood spilled across the deck.

So....am I to take it that Bush fights this entire battle wearing nothing but his shirt?? I'm sure that must contravene Admiralty regulations. Ladies, I need to know!

Which also means that Mr Bush is wearing nothing but his shirt several paragraphs later during the touching scene with Mr Hornblower?

He could only shake his head a little, smiling because of the sense of comfort and security conveyed by Hornblower's hands.

And just where exactly are Mr Honblower's hands at this point? Hmn?

Yes. Yes, those would be the very ones.

My dear, I don't know if I _dare_ read any further!

Well, there's important stuff going on. Sometimes you've got to sacrifice decency for the sake of the ship! ;)

Perhaps that's his secret. I imagine it would be quite distracting to try and fight a man with no pants on :p

He's lucky it was just his leg that ended up being cut off, trousers were created for a reason, Mr. Bush!

Ouch!!! Mind you, I'm sure the ship's carpenter could have fixed him up with a wooden one.

Do you realize that my brain will be completely dysfunktional for the rest of the day?

Well don't blame me! It was CSF wot done it!

...he kicked out with his bare feet to free himself from the hands that grabbed at him.

Just imagine....!

*rofl* I should have read Lieutenant Hornblower more attentively. Wouldn't have guessed that there was so much to miss!

That reminds me of a scene in The Commodore where Hornblower is too preoccupied to put his clothes back on after his deck shower and stands naked on deck for an hour or so! Heaven knows what that did to the poor crew... :p

Really? But, what else would you expect from a book called "Hornblower"??!! =)

For an hour??! *speechless*

I would have expected better of Mr Hornblower. He'll catch his death standing about in the scud like that!

Hm, I guess it was easy for him to come up with warm thoughts to think in a situation like that...

This... This is why I like the AoS fandom so much.

Jack Aubrey does something similar - comes up on deck after he usual morning swim in his birthday suit, realises there's a lady on deck (they're transporting her to Australia, but she is a lady and is allowed to take the air on the quarterdeck) and seizes his First Lieutenant as a shield so he can dive down the companionway out of her sight.

One can only imagine the look on Pullings' face... and wish screenwriters stuck closer to their source material.

I know why they couldn't put that one in any movie that included Mrs. Wogan! (Pretty sure her book wasn't the same as the one from the movie.) Russell Crowe isn't a tall man. James D'Arcy is six foot three. Looked this up when watching him tower over the cast of Nicholas Nickleby the other day. Jack wouldn't just be shielded, he'd be entirely hidden!

I'd say he should have grabbed a midshipman, but that would give entirely the wrong impression.

Whee, Jack/Pullings! ♥
In which book does that happen?

Jack’s "birthday suit" in that deleted swimming scene from M&C is rather disappointing, too. I reckon even back then babies were less bashful... ;)

Oh why on earth did PMG have his pants on? I mean I know A&E had to consider their target audience but still......

I suspect if A&E had _really_ been considering their target audience there would have been less trousers, more deck showers and they'd _never_ have killed off Archie!
