A' Dol Dhachaigh

I'm off on holiday tomorrow for a fortnight. We're going up to the Outer Hebrides again but this time we'll be spending the first week camping and for the second week we'll be staying here.


This house was bult by my great-grandfather, my grandparents lived here and so did my father. The house should eventually have gone to my sister but my father's second wife tried to sell it after he died (long story). Luckily two of my cousins were able to buy it and renovate it and they now let it out. In the kitchen they've hung pictures of the whole family going right back to my great-great-grandparents so that vistors to the house can see the family that belonged here. My sister and I and our two daughters are there too. I spent a lot of mychildhood here, and although I've visited the house several times since my cousins bought it, this will be the first time I've stayed here for almost 30 years. I'm really looking forward to staying but it'll be strange too. Lots of ghosts here.

Always strange to go back to a childhood place, you stumble over little things that clutch the heart. I do know what you mean about ghosts!

What a lovely thing to be able to share that with your own child. I had that experience taking mine to the Vineyard. There was one night where my brother and I and kids slept out on the beach (no tent, just sleeping bags near a fire in the sand.) Even something as simple as baked potatoes in foil in the fire was new to them!

I bet you can see the stars really well there.

It's an amazing spot. I think my great grandfather built this house with money he'd made at the height of the herring fishing boom.

Yes, the first time I went back was very, very strange. In the old byre you can see in the pic on the left I found the remains of a go-kart we'd made out of an old pram when we were kids. Lots of ghosts, but most of them happy ones.

Yes, it's really quite special to be able to do things like this with your children isn't it? I'm sure yours will always remember their night on the beach :)

It's a gorgeous spot, though it can get really wild. If there's a high tide and it gets stormy the waves hit the front of the house!

Thank you! It smells of the sea, of course, and seaweed and rain. One summer when I was a kid a whale died off shore right in front of the house. That smelled rather less pleasant!

Eww. That I can imagine :) Poor whale though. I just once had a glimpse of what the sea smells like - with dear nodbear at Portsmouth and a bit on the Thames :)
