Vegesack BV2
Sep. 8th, 2012 11:52 pmA few more pics from our trip down the Caledonian Canal in July, this time of one oldest vessels we bumped into. Well not literally, thankfully.... :} This is Vegesack BV2 a sailing lugger built in 1895 at the famous Bremer Vulkan shipyard in Bremen-Vegesack in Germany. The iron hulled herring drifter was restored in Hamburg in 1982, and is now owned by a maritime trust which operates charters in the North and Baltic Seas.
Sadly we didn't see this lovely ship under sail, but she was berthed close by us at Fort Augustus and she also came into Caley Cruiser's yard, to refuel and pump out, the day we returned our boat. She looked so enormous when she sailed into the boat yard that I honestly thought her bowsprit was going to hit our van which was parked right beside the canal! It was also seriously impressive seeing her captain doing what was effectively a three point turn in the confines of the canal in order to get into the yard. I'm sure Mr Bush would have been impressed with such exemplary ship handling!
