The university were I'm based recently posted these fascinating images from their archive.

The Land Ship 1913

This is the Deviascope or Land-Ship, a mock navigation bridge which was built on the roof of the School of Navigation at the Royal Technical College, Glasgow. The Land-Ship was a revolving platform with a Kelvin compass mounted on the top and it was used to teach the School’s students the principles of compass adjustment. At the time, it was considered a unique piece of equipment.

Incidentally the rather impressive turret in the background of this picture is the roof of Glasgow City Chambers. You can also see some 1940s film of the Land Ship in action at the Scottish Screen Archive here. And here's are a couple of rather lovely images from the School of Navigation's 1956 prospectus. I particularly like the lads knotting and splicing!
