I now seem to have progressed to buying vintage paperbacks purely for their cheesy covers. This may or may not be a good thing. I blame [livejournal.com profile] esmerelda_t for the fact that I now have two copies of Lord Hornblower and two of Hornblower and the Crisis. However we also found this rather lovely copy of Hornblower and the Atropos.

Lord Hornblower, Penguin Books, 1946. Fabulously wonky cover drawing by one Robin Jacques.

Hornblower and the Crisis, Pan Books, 1972. For my money Pan Books always win hands down for their outrageously camp covers.

Hornblower and the Atropos, Mermaid Books, 1954. This is just a very lovely edition in beautiful condition.

I also picked up this edition of eye witness accounts of the battle of Trafalgar which looks very interesting and which, according to the cover blurb, is "...embellished with a large number of unusual illustrations, mainly taken from early charts and pictures of the battle..." And there was me thinking they were just more wonky line drawings ;)

I still really love that Atropos cover and think you should try and collect the series! :P

As if I didn't have enough distractions I shall now be spending half the day trawling online book stores for more Mermaid editions. It is indeed lovely and a whole set of them would look very fine in my bookcase. I might even to tempted to put them in order ;)

I thought you'd have snuck back to the shop to put them in order by now! ;)

Those look awesome!
*sigh* One day I'm going to move to the UK! Shipping fees for anything else than Amazon books are astronomical, so I can never buy anything from vintage book stores. :(

Awww shame. We are _very_ lucky when it comes to vintage book shops. I suspect you could do a lot of damage in the book shops round here. Some of them also have excellent classical and archaeological sections. If there are any particular titles you're after let me know, I'd be happy to look out for them.

Aw, thanks! That wouldn't solve the problem with the high postage costs, though. :/

Does it _really_ cost that much to send books within Europe? I sent a couple of books to a friend in Rome at Christmas but I can't remember how much it cost!

Yes, I think so. Last time I ordered books directly from a publisher I paid 5 pounds per item. The whole package can't have weighed much more than a kilo, but it cost me 15 pounds. And with vintage books... I'd find it annoying if the postage cost more than the books themselves...

Eek! That _is_ a bit pricey. Maybe you will have to come and live in the UK after all! ;)

I'm a sucker for old books, as you might have guessed! The Trafalgar book looks fascinating. It tells the whole story of the battle from beginning to end in passages from eyewitness accounts and personal letters. I'll write a review when I eventually get round to reading it but at the moment it's at the bottom of a very large book pile!
