Last weekend we went for a spin down to Culzean. I know I've posted dozens of pictures of Culzean before but it really is such a beautiful place that it's impossible not to post more. We spent most of the day in the walled garden which is a part of the estate I haven't visited for a while. The weather was gorgeous, the gardens were filled with families enjoying the sun and there were children splashing in the fountain. It was easy to imagine a small fair boy with eyes like summer playing by the fountain...

The bottom left picture was taken inside the beautiful walled garden vinery, which still boasts the most incredible assortment of vines. There has been a vinery at Culzean since the late 18th century though it was substantially rebuilt in the 1880s. The information board in the vinery helpfully explains:

Grapes, now so commonplace, were once regarded as a luxurious fruit. The ability of the Culzean gardeners to provide a continual supply would not only have helped to provide a rich diet for the family, but also served to flaunt the wealth and status of the Kennedy family.

Those Kennedys, always showing off... ;)

There is a lovely part in Dr Faustus where he commands the devil to bring his pregnant guest grapes in winter.

She is amazed-- and Faustus explains that below the equator it is hot while we are in winter.

Cullzean is amazing. I still have the book you sent me about it. And, of course it is where the silver razor came from!

Wow, that's amazing! I don't remember that line from Dr Faustus! Of course you can't mention Faustus and Archie in the same breath without me posting this....

Gah! All those lovely plants! And that horse! And blue sky... *sighs* Those Kennedys :) Again I'm a bit envious. But maybe it's the lousy rain over here.
Thanks for posting this! Now I feel better.

How is Scotland so beautiful?

You know that there a fic has to be written now where Archie plies Horation with delicious Culzean grapes?

One of our natural talents ;)

Hmmm....I do believe there could be a plot bunny in there! Although, I don't think Archie is actually descended directly from the Kennedys of Culzean, I think his lineage goes back to The Factor ;)

I always think of you when we drive down that road now :) And yes, horses! We saw three of them, but this was the only one I managed to get a picture of.

Culzean always reminds me of a fairytale castle :) It was really hard to take pictures that day as it was so bright and the light was reflecting off the sea. Magical, but almost impossible to photograph :}
