I've quite deliberately kept referendum politics off LJ, though I'm far from an impartial observer. There's so much I could say, but here is not the place. Suffice to say I was ten at the time of the last referendum and my daughter is eight now. I vividly remember the aftermath of the 1979 vote and the economic depression and disenfranchisement that were Scotland's lot throughout the Thatcherite years. I hope it will be different this time. What ever decision we wake up to on Friday morning I hope that we can all look ahead to a brighter future.

Thank you! It's been great to know people all across the world have been thinking off us. And I got your lovely card today! How very timely, it really made me smile :)

It's been very fascinating to hear about from afar -- hearing arguments of varying strength for both sides, I got the feeling it could really go either way. I'm sorry it didn't go as you hoped.
Glad to hear the card arrived, though! I thought you'd enjoy it, and wish I'd sent it earlier. I suppose it was a referendum day card in the end!

Thank you my dear! I think there's still a long way to go before we know what has really been decided on.

We didn't get the result I'd hoped for but the electoral turn out was immense. There's a lot we can still be proud of including the chap in your icon.

Most important: that Scotland is being given the chance to make the choice!

Agreed! There was a time I never thought I would see an independence referendum in my lifetime. It's been a privilege to be able to vote.

How many wars, revolutions, etc could have been avoided over the centuries if the choice had been left up to the voters? Anyway, as a casual but interested observer I'm glad it's over and done. Had thoughts both ways on it and am both satisfied and dissatisfied with the results. Glad to see things will remain as the were, with no great upheavals, and yet miss the chance to see the adventures of an Independent Scotland.

I think it says a lot about how relatively civil the nature of the debate has been that people can disagree and not fall out about it. Like us. :p That's surely the very essence of democracy.

Although I have fallen out with father but that was mainly because he laughed when I said I still couldn't do my driving manoeuvres!

Despite the appalling behaviour of some sectors of the press, it's been remarkably civil and I think that's something we can all be proud of. I've got many colleagues who have argued passionately on both sides of the divide but who have always listened respectfully to the views of others. Regardless of the result, that has to bode well for the future.

SOrry was in Paris at the time of the vote but we were still thinking of you
and true to the spirit of the old alliance the French papers were full of the vote and interest in it
Scotland will have much to offer us in the future judging by present politics south of the border
my first ever vote as a newly enfranchised 18 year old( now you make me feel my age !) was in the welsh referendum and I have to say we had no real idea quite what an impact all those Thatcher years were to have as you describe - it was much the same for us
Dave is right though at least people had a free choice so many people in the world must look on ad wish that they had
belated hugs
