Admiral Nelson Duck. Yours for £5 from the National Museum of the Royal Navy Portsmouth.

Nelson Duck

Predictably, I've already seen on outraged comment on Facebook complaining that this is "lacking in dignity and taste...entirely inappropriate..." Poor ducky! I suppose matching Horatio and Archie duckies would be too much to ask for? ;)

Dignity and taste are in the eyes of the beholder. He looks plenty dignified to me! And I agree... "cute!"

I suspect the arrangement of the buttons on his jacket are not quite correct. Otherwise he is perfectly historically accurate. *nods*

Were there not, in Lord Nel's time, lots of fan stuff you could buy, like "I love Nelson" brooches? I bet he'd have loved the duck.

"Lord love a duck", hmm?

Oh, someone had to say it sooner or later. Might as well be me.

ROFL! Good point! There's a great tradition of Nelsonic tat, so a cute little ducky is entirely in keeping :)

Charlie said it before I could. That is a very eager duck-- ready to 'go right at 'em.'

Think of the havoc he'd cause in the bath!

I'm curious, whence we see that it is Nelson? Besides the label, of course :) It has only one wing? %-0
I'm perfect bore, know :D

But I like idea Horatio and Archie ducks :))

Tsk! And I'm sure Nelson's beak was not quite that shade of orange ;)

I like idea Horatio and Archie ducks :))
Horatio and Archie ducks sooooo need to be a thing :)

It's all very good to be in history books, but you're not really famous until you get a rubber duck in your image. :D

Indeed. This fine ducky is the pinacle of Nelson's naval legacy.

Young Horatio Duck has arrived well and safe. I was horrified to see the postage though. Please let me share it.

I don't see what they're complaining about. I don't think it's disrespectful. I think it's cute. I'd buy one if I had the chance.

Puts me in mind of that nursery rhyme you posted a while back: "The captain was a duck with a jacket on his back..."

Yes! That's exactly what it made me think of! My lovely Anne Grahame Johnstone duck :)

aww... cute, and how come inappropriate, I would rather have a sea hero that is a water toy, than a weird bobble-head for car dashboard...

I actually got a bunch of little ducks that were on sale a while ago to make custom ducks... just haven't yet had time for them.

Date: 2014-10-02 09:57 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] anteros-lmc.livejournal.com
Agreed. I think he is entirely appropriate!

PS I can't wait to see what you make of your custom ducks when you find time for them :)

[livejournal.com profile] amaraal And self are looking into the issue of Horatio and Archie ducks inspired by this fine example of naval memorabilia

we read your post when on holiday here and having bought a Sherlock Holmes duck in the museum at 221B Baker Street and been annoyed to find there was no
Dr Watson duck to accompany him
which we rather felt missed the point -there can't really be one without the other

and so indeed miss the point does the facebook winger about Nelson ducks Nelson is lucky to be remembered with such breadth -from stuffy old naval historians bemoaning 'O tempera ! O mores! ' as they arthritically pass the port to little kids launching him at Bathtime.

What say we take one as a mascot next week ;)
Any money on an Emma duck ere long though
