This beautiful thing was posted on twitter yesterday by Amber Butchart, author of the forthcoming Nautical Chic which I mentioned here recently. Apparently it's a nagajuban, an under robe for a kimono, dating from 1905 and decorated with anchors and cherry blossoms. It made me think of the lovely pictures [livejournal.com profile] katriona_s posted of her grandmother's kimonos and I thought she would like to see it :)

It's so elegant, I think I'd be afraid to wear it except for the most ceremonious occasions. I can't believe it is an under robe -- what must the kimono look like?

Here in Japan, especially in the end of Edo period (the beginning of 19th century), people sometimes wear more colourful underwear under the quiet colour outer garment - it's considered chic and smart. Nowadays I believe most of time we wear white or pale pink nagajuban under kimono, but we can buy bright red one if we like it.

This is awesome! Two opposed things on one fabric. The heavy anchor and the light weight cherry blossom... *stares* Nice pattern too. This is underwear! Incredible :) The world is full of magnificent things. Thank you!!!

Thank you for sharing this with us. This is beautiful. Cherry blossom is the popular motif for Nagajuban or Kimono, but I've never seen anchors on them!
