"Archie Kennedy burst into sobs; he was nothing but a boy, and he was frightened and only half sober."

Nope, not an extract from my latest fanfic (well not yet anyway ;) This is something I unearthed last night while faffing around doing some research on google books. I was actually looking for a copy of the memoirs of Lieutenant, later Admiral, George Vernon Jackson (he of the "vermin troubles") when I got distracted by randomly searching for Archie Kennedy. Yeah, yeah, one track mind, easily distracted, I know.

I have no idea what this book is or when it was published and to be honest even I am not sufficiently obsessed to spent a moment longer of my time looking into a book called Across an Ulster Bog. Suffice to say this particular Archie Kennedy (no relation) has just been complicit in the murder of a man on a lonely moor. And, true to type, he's not a very happy bunny. The unfortunate victim is being buried in the bog and the improbably named ringleader, Eccles Lindsey, tells poor half sober Archie:

"Archie, quit makin' a woman of yourself, and take a hoult of the body round the oxter."

Next fic I write I am so going to have Archie taking a hold of Horatio's body round his oxters ;)

This particular Archie continues making a woman of himself as they drop the body into the bog:

Wet drops flew into the men's faces; young Kennedy, shivering and sobbing, wiped his cheek feverishly again and again.

True to form though, Archie does get the last word in:

"And God forgive us!" said Archie Kennedy under his breath.

THE END

Why is it that fictional Archie Kennedys always have to be tragic young put upon types? Hmn?

I'm sorry, that was a completely pointless post wasn't it?!

I think I've read that fan fic.

*gasp* My Archie never cries! Possibly he was born without tear ducts, which is the most tragic thing of all. *nods sadly*

He'll be crying if Bartholomew find his way into that bog I can tell you!

Not as much as Horatio, who'll be pushed in to fish him out and them made clean him.

Right, I'm really off to bed now!

So should I be ( off to bed I mean )but after 14 hours work today feel I need a few moments with the navy boys,

So I did something far more pointless -surveyed all the Archibald Kennedys in the Times archive - and its not just the fictional Archies, sinisterly enough, who seem to be doomed to tragedy.

Of 37 citations between 1785 and 1985 about six or so concern the Earl Of Cassilis of course - but of the others two are dead men on whom inquests are held, one is an old man arrested for brawling, one is a young soldier whose friend commits suicide and another a guard on a train which is robbed..another a WW1 casualty.

It suggests that actual or fictional - the name is not a lucky one

though delightfully one is a sub-lieutenant, RN! That Archibald Kennedy is of Her Majesty's ship Druid, then off the Cape Coast during the Ashanti war in 1874.wonder if he was halfway as cute. There were no Horatios aboard though.

And thats me off to bed too !

Good lord! You did didn't you?! I thought I had reached the apotheosis of pointlessness! ;)

And don't forget Archibald Kennedy, jewelers apprentice from Edinburgh, who was executed in 1846 for his part in the '45. And who is soon to be appearing in a fan fic near you if I can ever find time to finish the damn thing!

Night all!

Pointless? POINTLESS? It was absolutely vital and germane. This is exactly the sort of stimulus we fangirls need.

There was an Archie Kennedy on the Victory at Trafalgar, but you probably know that.

I do apologise. I'm still getting the hang of this fan girl business :) We must take our Archie Kennedys where we find them. Even if it's in an Ulster bog!

Indeed. A 37 year old Scottish able seaman. Anyone know what happened to him?

37. Yep. The same age as the scrumptious JB is now!

No idea what happened to him (he didn't distinguish/disgrace himself enough in battle to get a mention in any of the Trafalgar books I've read...)

So he is! :) Although I suspect Victory'sArchie Kennedy looked rather more weather beaten than the scrumptious JB by the age of 37!
