Good to be back & belated thanks
Jul. 20th, 2010 12:08 amWell, I must say it's very nice to be back. My week at home in the Outer Hebrides passed uneventfully enough however staying with an elderly and confused parent can be a leetle bit stressful, especially when you throw a boisterous four year old into the mix. I could do with a holiday now.
Weather was appalling all week but we were very lucky to have two good crossings in between almost continual gales for which I am very thankful. It takes less than three hours to cross the Minch but it can be a very nasty bit of sea. It was so cold and wet that we barely got out however on the plus side I have come home without a single midgey bite which is almost unheard of!
Huge THANK YOU to
Birthday itself passed very quietly. Partner got me a rather fab haul of Age of Sail books including Cordingly's Cochrane The Dauntless and Ships and Seascapes: an introduction to maritime prints, drawings and watercolours plus two editions of The Age of Sail: The International Annual of the Historic Sailing Ship, which I suspect was a rather short lived publication but appears to include some very interesting essays and amazing photographs. He also managed to get tickets to see Hespèrion XXI and Ex Cathedra at the Edinburgh International Festival which I am over the moon about as I thought both were sold out. Both are performing programmes of Latin American baroque and renaissance music at Greyfriar's Kirk.
I had hoped to do lots of writing over the week but didn't have much free time or head space. However I did manage a couple of book reviews, one court martial transcript and one rather dodgy fic. I also finished reading Basil Hall's The Midshipman and am coming to the conclusion that he is one of the most gifted and charming authors ever to have passed through the ranks of the Royal Navy.
And while we're on the subject of charming young men, I re-watched the BSG episode Bastille Day on
A following sea, taken from MV Isle of Lewis

Heh yes, I started to relax as soon as we left the island and we spent a lovely night camping in Fort William on Monday night so I feel like I had one days holiday!
There's a postcard on it's way for you btw!

Date: 2010-07-20 08:58 am (UTC)as you knonw I have extensive sympathy for the elderly mother non holiday aspedct - currently here in Wales encountering the social worker et al
Glad about the sea crossings - am still trying to develop my photo manipulation skills to level of ocmpetence to post something for you on that front - but as current competence is nil there is a way to go !
Re watching D and the D again - i have just started doing that and concur with all you say mainly.
re RL and scene stealing - re CL and IG ( well - he may not be a great actor but he is still a lovely boy and there are worse things at sea) and re IG and acting - loath though I am to say it its true its not good - think that is one of the reasons I have written a world in which Archie and Edward interact far more than on screen ( ie never almost) because it would have been fun to see those two spark off one naother as characters and actors. Though as a loyal south walian I am haunted by a vague sense of guilt and a pair of fathomless brown eyes even as I write.. *goes back to view IG reading " I am Taliesin" in Welsh for quite a different feeling*

Date: 2010-07-20 09:15 am (UTC)I fear I may be sadly out of practice on that front! I shall have to make a concerted effort to hone my innuendo skills again ;)

Hope you get on okay. *hugs and sympathy*
he is still a lovely boy
He is a lovely boy and he has a very lovely accent!
because it would have been fun to see those two spark off one naother as characters and actors.
So very true. Although I suspect that might have highlighted acting deficiencies elsewhere even more ;)

and he has a lovely accent
an occasional game to play when you really haven't better things to do is to spot the emerging accent- ie where does IG's Welshness most clearly appear through HH and, come to that, RL's Nottinghamshire vowels get the better of RADA occasionally too- sorry that is as much the philologist as well as the fangirl but it can be fun*...Answers on a postcard- no,sorry you already did the postcard bit !
So very true. Although I suspect that might have highlighted acting deficiencies elsewhere even more ;)
Alas yes, suppose it would. Anyway, te he, that means making it all up is even more fun. Actually when one studies Archie's face during that great " we are at war" moment it says it all - relief, joy, pleasure- but also a wry and cynical sense that here is another showman like himself...while HH's is simply hero worship
Now you're talking!! You do realise that a large number of the 1600 youtube viewings are me and esmerelda_t don't you?
and all the rest are me *shiver down spine* or ...unigoyn bendigedig a mae’n olygus as we would say here

Definitely!

Dare I ask you to translate that?! ;)
i'd say neither moment is in D and the D, I have to say
Awww come on! All that "I didn't notice..." angst as he unceremoniously dumps Archie on the bed like a sack of potatoes sounds distinctly Welsh to me!!

Date: 2010-07-20 02:41 pm (UTC)It juat means ! A lovely- in the sense of lovely nature- bloke and a gorgeous man loosely translated
and yes, - sorry I mislead you over accents ( although my D and the D re-watch hasn't reached that point in time yet so I have to remind myself )- I am looking out for isolated moments where just the odd phrase or even word is a dead giveaway - the best RL 'Nottinghamshire moment' is only a very few words for instance - and two of these accent- incidents are in the same episode I think.
but you are surely right about the angst in the Ferrol scene - just have to make time to re watch it soon ...:)

Date: 2010-07-20 05:36 pm (UTC)You're going to have to teach me how to pronounce that!
Do you think IG's acting would have been better if they'd filmed HH in Welsh? Given that he's a linguist,
I'm sure JB would have no trouble getting his tongue round the Welsh.I'm sorry, clearly I have been deprived of innuendo for too long *hangs head in shame*the best RL 'Nottinghamshire moment' is only a very few words
If you can do an impersonation of a Nottinghamshire accent for me I'll see if I can spot it!

Date: 2010-07-20 04:16 pm (UTC)IG is patchy? I'd never have noticed that /sarc. Prettyness makes up for it though. And as for Robert Lindsey, he is just deliciousness incarnate when making icons, because he has so many lovely expressions.

Date: 2010-07-20 05:39 pm (UTC)I don't think so. He looked all right in that deckshower scene. His acting can be terrible though ;)
And as for Robert Lindsey, he is just deliciousness incarnate when making icons, because he has so many lovely expressions.
He is indeed! Loved those icons you made btw. Shall have to go and have a proper look at them and snaffle one or two :)

Date: 2010-07-20 05:42 pm (UTC)Possibly too alright - a bit milky smooth for someone in his line of work. Not that I was looking very hard, you understand...
snaffle one or two :)
Feel free! I'm thinking of doing a whole post of just Pellew icons, although it's very easy to get distracted by others when screencapping.

That one above is just brilliant, it's such a good shot.

Date: 2010-07-20 06:44 pm (UTC)I think IG is much maligned in terms of his acting choices in HH, he acts like a pompous, self righteous, dork, and that's exactly what's called for IMO. There's also the fact he's not acting in his native language. Bamber's acting is painful in the BSG mini because he's too busy thinking about the accent. I imagine acting and keeping an accent up at the same time is harder than it looks. It's probably even harder doing it in what's not your first language.

Date: 2010-07-20 07:10 pm (UTC)It's just one of those mysteries that will never be explained.

Date: 2010-07-21 01:35 am (UTC)As for IG, I hadn't noticed his patchy acting either XD But I suspect the boy's mighty-prettyness probably had something to do with that. Also I guess Hornblower isn't too difficult a character to play as long as you have mastered the following facial expressions: a.) adorable confusion b.) adorable self-righteousness c.) adorable discomfort d.) adorable grin filled with adoration for the equally adorable Archie Kennedy. XD

Date: 2010-07-21 09:13 am (UTC)Despite gales I think I'm slightly jealous of your sea-crossings
You're welcome to them missy! The Minch is a short stretch of water but it's a bugger to cross in a gale, particularly a northerly one. On a good day it is rather nice though :)
IG's prettiness certainly helps to distract from the patchy acting and of course when you combine his prettiness with JBs prettiness and those naval uniforms the result is exponential slashiness ;)
Dying to read your M&C post btw, so many fab posts to catch up with!

Date: 2010-07-21 11:41 pm (UTC)Oh absolutely. I'm toying with the idea of writing a post on why Archie/Horatio are my OTP. XD It's clear that the boys of His Majesty's Navy have completely taken over my blog, I might as well go all the way with it XD
And ooh! Do tell me what you think of it! Also you may well like my M&C fanart: http://community.livejournal.com/perfect_duet/365976.html I also started some fanart for Hornblower but am decidedly unhappy with how Archie looks. May try again when I feel brave enough. Some visual representations are needed of Archie and Horatio's infamous night in Portsmouth after all ;)

Have you seen mylodon's lovely Idol Reflection on Archie Kennedy?
No I hadn't! Just read it though - awww, bless! I love Archie. In terms of physical attractiveness Horatio is so much more the type of man I'd find beautiful but for all the reasons listed in the post Archie Kennedy wins out for the top spot in my heart. <3
Thank you m'dear! :D Am very glad you liked it - I was rather unhappy with Archie's face (had intended to make him rather more mischievous and saucy. Instead he looks like a fangirl - *fail*) but overall am v.happy with it. And haha! I'm very fond of that tortoise. ^^ As for wombats, I'm sure I could give it a whirl!

*sigh* So true, so very true. Isn't it a lovely article?! There is also the Ship Manifesto which I believe was written by someone who left the fandom under a cloud long before Archie and Horatio were even a glint in my eye.

That is definitely a tortoise to be proud off! I shall look forward to the wombats ;)

Oh it's so so true about Horatio and Archie! (I knew someone else must've written about why Horatio/Archie = OTP, dammit. Still I might do mine anyway because it'll be with reference to Mr. Bush too XD).
I shall look forward to the wombats ;)
When next I make M&C fanart I shall be sure to include one!

Date: 2010-07-27 12:30 pm (UTC)I would be a very happy bunny if you wrote something like this :D It would be lovely to have a new H/A ship manifesto, the last one was written 6 years ago! And anything that brings in Mr Bush is an added bonus. I'm a great believer in making an effort to bring the book and movieverse sides of the fandom together :)
When next I make M&C fanart I shall be sure to include one!
Archie is keeping a close look out for those pesky wombats!

Btw, you do know that there are islands off the North coast of Australia named after Edward Pellew don't you? They were named after him in 1802 by captain and cartographer Matthew Flinders. Might find some wombats there....run little plot bunny run!

Woo hoo! Has it got wombats in it?! It continually amazes me just how little Aubreyad / HH crossover fic there is, maybe you're the girl to fix that! Humour in HH fic is always good given that he has a tendency to be such a pompous bugger when Archie's not around ;)
