....I've been to London to visit the queen!

Of course I wouldn't be remotely interested in visiting the queen but I was hugely excited to meet up with [livejournal.com profile] nodbear and [livejournal.com profile] esmerelda_t in London on Thursday and Friday. [livejournal.com profile] nodbear and I had a wonderful afternoon catching up over lunch before [livejournal.com profile] esmerelda_t came to join us for a drink after work. As [livejournal.com profile] nodbear has already pointed out, for some strange reason we were the only women sitting in the terrace bar overlooking the Thames pouring over a sea chart of Brest :} I particularly enjoyed the view as I'd been reading Hornblower and the Atropos and the funeral procession debacle on the flight on the way down! Three real live HH fangirls all in the same place at the same time, when was the last time that happened? It was just a shame I had to dash off for an evening work meeting. However I did manage to meet [livejournal.com profile] esmerelda_t again very briefly for sushi and drinks on Friday before catching my flight home. The flight attendant who made the landing announcement when we arrived in Glasgow was a rather nice young man with a very pronounced Spanish accent. So when he said "On behalf of the crew and the cap-ee-tan...." he reminded me of the Spanish captain who Hornblower strikes his prize to in The Dutchess and the Devil ;)

A perfect spot for studying sea charts ;)

That sounds like it was a lot of fun :)

It was fun :) It's the first time I've managed to combine a work trip with fangirlyness. Usually I fly down and back in a day and it's just a bit of a drag.

Did I mention I was half an hour wandering around Paddington on Friday night trying to find the tube to Kings Cross? Nothing to do with the wine, I assure you...

Of course it was nothing to do with the wine. They must have moved the tube station. It's nothing short of a miracle I managed to get on to the right flight! ;)

I think there must be spirits guiding drunks on the underground, I like to think it's the disaproving ghost of Lord H guiding me. :P

Hahaha! I can't think of a better spirit guide for inebriated fangirls! He'd be grumbling and spluttering all the way of course ;)

I have to say that I fell asleep on the way home - think the wine had something to so with that as well. And there was a hold up on the e;evated section of the M4 as well ( btw, in case anyone worries about that last sentence it wasn't me driving..
Can't understand why all the punters in the bar weren't reading sea charts of Brest - I mean why not ?

I would have fallen asleep in my meeting if the inconsiderate buggers hadn't been talking so loudly ;)

Exactly. Tsk! What's the city coming to? I fear both the Admiral and Lord Hornblower would be horrified.

I fear they would - and actually we could do with Horatio to teach us a little navigation skills to help interpret those maps.

And as for London standing - yep , had it been more than an hour or two we would probably have been up to something one way or the other

but yes, lets appoint [livejournal.com profile] esmerelda_t as our officical investigator of the ship on the plinth if she is willing ao to be

We could indeed. Am trying not to think about Horatio's long fingers on that chart.... ;)

And as for London standing - yep
Glasgow should probably start worrying pretty soon!

I think [livejournal.com profile] esmerelda_t shall be requested and required to investigate the plinth!

Thought you were having an early night missy?? ;)

Archie doesn't think that is too much a problem - he is about to quote his favourite bit of Dr Donne

and of course I don't yet know how to do tiny fonts - or maybe I have just learned so that I can say yes by the time of this post the early night had won- your icon gets me every time. Those long fingers. They need a font size just for celebrating them!

I'm surprised London's still standing, with three mad fangirls meeting like that! Oh, wait - I haven't heard the news since Friday morning... ;p
It sounds like a lovely two days!

Is the bottle with the ship already on the pillar on Trafalgar Square?? (Did you even go there?)

I think if we had actually spent a whole two days together London would indeed be counting the cost! Sadly I was at meetings Thursday night and all day Friday so fangirl time was less than it might have been. However it's quality not quantity that counts as we all know and we did indeed have a very lovely time.

We didn't get to Trafalgar Square but I think we should send [livejournal.com profile] esmerelda_t along to check it out!

Lovely icon btw :)

d'aww what fun! Sounds like you all had a grand time. I do have quite a fondness for the Thames - it's the closest I've been to the sea in far too long (and of course, the thought of grumpy!Horatio leading a funeral procession up it is hilarious) ^^

It's true, rivers are the next best thing to the sea. I was sorry to move further form the river when I moved house recently.

It is hilarious. The bit where the funeral barge springs a leak had me snorting with laughter on the plane!

Allow me to quote Mr CSF himself:

"Hornblower wondered with sick despair whether a man had ever been so plagued as he was."

Although it has to be said, poor Horatio can be a bit of a drama queen ;)

Date: 2010-07-27 12:10 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] venusinfurs90.livejournal.com
I love Horatio's drama queen moments though - they're too brilliant! Much better than his self-detestation moments, even though they are often linked. Have you read Horatio throwing a hissy-fit over Lady Barbara cleverly seeing through his "ha-hm"'s? XD

Date: 2010-07-27 12:26 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] anteros-lmc.livejournal.com
I haven't met Lady Barbara yet, I've only reached Atropos so far! She sounds like a fabulous character though. [livejournal.com profile] esmerelda_t memorably described her as "Archie in a dress"!

Date: 2010-07-27 07:05 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] venusinfurs90.livejournal.com
I have to admit, I'm actually finding it quite hard to warm up to Lady Barbara - though she has her brilliant moments. They're quite a few reasons for this actually, but certainly one of the main factors is that the thought of Horatio actually having a heterosexual love-interest kinda traumatizes me. XD This is also true of the lady Horatio has an affair with in one of the later books and there is talk of him admiring bosoms and things and it's just so so wrong! XD Straight!Horatio = doesn't compute! Just about every other character in this fandom I can easily imagine admiring bosoms but for some reason it really weirds me out when Horatio does it, it just doesn't seem to be in-character with whom I imagine him to be.

Date: 2010-07-28 08:59 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] anteros-lmc.livejournal.com
I'll let you know what I think about Barabara when I reach that stage in the books!

In the meantime I agree that it's hard to imagine Horatio lusting after women. And Archie thinks so too...have a read of Glorious ;)

From: [identity profile] venusinfurs90.livejournal.com
I did indeed have a little look-see at some of your older fics ;) (as well as your fabulous links archive homg so happy!) Glorious and the fic that follows on from it were one of my favs. <3 I don't care what Forester says, Horry is just not straight. C.S.F. can make him admire as many bosoms as he wants he still won't get me to believe it.

Nothing at all if it took ITV to finally develop the potential of the Archie Kennedy character some fifty years later. XD

I quite agree! And no sooner had ITV created the lovely Mr Kennedy than the Forester estate demand they kill him off. Rotten bastards. *sulk*
