Trafalgar Broadside Auction
Sep. 3rd, 2010 09:09 pmThere are a couple of AoS related items coming up at auctions next week, most notably this broadside announcing the victory at Trafalgar which is being sold by Lyon and Turnbull auctioneers in Edinburgh on the 8th September and is expected to fetch between £10,000-15,000. According to the catalogue entry a similar broadsheet sold for £38,400 during Sotheby's Trafalgar sale in 2005! Typically Collingwood only appears in the small print. Tsk!

There are also some other interesting items in this sale including a series of French naval engravings that I'm rather curious about.
Bonhams also has a sale of Pictures including Maps & Marine, Furniture & Works of Art on the 7th. I got quite excited when I discovered they are selling a watercolour of the Indefatigable until I saw the picture.

That'll be the 1945 HMS Indefatigable then... ;)
One of the more intriguing items in this sale is Lot 100 which includes:
I quite fancy a midshipman’s sword!

One of the more intriguing items in this sale is Lot 100 which includes:
a letter from Admiral John Jervis, 1st Earl of St. Vincent, on the appointment of a young naval officer, two engraved portraits of Jervis published 1799 and 1840 respectively, and a 19th Century mid-shipman's sword.
I quite fancy a midshipman’s sword!

Date: 2010-09-03 08:42 pm (UTC)I wonder who the "young naval officer" mentioned is? It's very intriguing!

So do I. But in honesty, I would only really like (a copy of) the letter St Vincent wrote to Lord Keith about the promotion of captains Cochrane and Dundas having been made post.

Oh aye? What did he say?

Date: 2010-09-04 05:51 am (UTC)"St. Vincent to Lord Keith, 4 September 1801, Letters of St Vincent(Navy Reords Society, 1921)vol. 1, p 222", so I'm afraid I do not know where the original letter is.
The list of Post Captains and Commanders so far exceeds that of ships and sloops, I cannot, consistently with what is due to the public and to the incredible number of meritorious persons of those classes upon half pay, promote except upon very extraordinary occasions, such as that of Lord Cochrane and Captain Dundas, who have the rank of Post Captain
I would be surprised, if it was not already in private hands. Still, I'd love to have a look because it shows that contrary to the grudge Cochrane held against his lordship (and boy, could he hold a grudge), St Vincent recognized the actions.
In my muddly peabrain I also like the fact that Jack Aubrey's exploits had been based on those of Lord Cochrane, and that there is a Heneage Dundas in RL and fiction.
;D

Date: 2010-09-04 07:48 am (UTC)however will see about your letter - the navy record soc volume in question should cite where it is and if it is in the Admiralty letters in ADM 1 or 2 at the National Archives and or the letters and papers of Lord K which are around at the NMM then you shall have it before September is out I hope .
Who would have been Spencer or Keith et al -they won the vistory by trying to sooth the hurts of the cochranes and keeping Edward Pellew and John borlase Warren appreciated and Bridport from entirely mis using his best commanders etc
but, other than Cuddy they were quite a bunch - enoough huffs and tantrums and the like for a Hollywood set - England's finest though all the same !
will keep you posted as to the search

Date: 2010-09-04 08:46 am (UTC)I find Spencer a fascinating character, the way he was able to handle characters as different as Warren, Pellew and Bridport was extraordinary. Although I think he did rather slip up when he ignored the original petitions that led to the Spithead mutiny.

Date: 2010-09-04 12:59 pm (UTC)You mean you are able to do that research? *envies* Take your time though. I will be away for most of September and am unlikely to return before the beginning of October.
I have a soft spot for Keith, but only because he was good for Jack Aubrey. The more recent bio wasn't bad either.
Thank you. :D

Not at all. Yours from Amazon for the princely sum of £11. Bargain! Although anyone can join the Navy Records Society for £40 per year.

Date: 2010-09-04 01:07 pm (UTC)Move it up! Wonderful idea! I may be biased because Cordingly is an O'Brian fanboy and because I like his Billy Ruffian
Will I ever! I must look through the Navy Records Society offers on amazon. Looks like rich pickings. :D

Date: 2010-09-03 09:32 pm (UTC)Mind you, do you think Cuddy would have been happy enough to have his name in the small print rather than splashed all over the headlines in BOLD TYPE?

Date: 2010-09-03 10:21 pm (UTC)Shall be intrigued to see what kind of prices these raise - don't buy at auction myself as like to be sure I am going to get what I have set my heart on - other than charity auctions that is
And Volgivavant I have a story for you about not being Nelson - to quote Mylodon earlier this evening
" its a British sailor with braid .it must be Nelson or Jack Aubrey "

Date: 2010-09-03 10:41 pm (UTC)Ineed! And Newbolt was the least of it! Although Cuddy does get this lovely verse in Coaly Tyne:
other than charity auctions that is
