Inspired by [livejournal.com profile] venusinfurs90 I have been trawling through my collection of sea songs. I had no idea I had so many! Most of them predate my AoS obsession by years but I suspect I should have recognised them as an early symptom of this affliction. Anyway, one of my many favourites is Eliza Carthy's version of Rolling Sea from Rogues Gallery which contains the following quite delightful verse and chorus:

Sailors they get all the money,
Soldiers they get none but brass,
How I love my rolling sailor,
Soldiers they can kiss my …

Oh, my little rolling sailor,
Oh, my little rolling he,
How I love my rolling sailor,
When he’s on the rolling sea.

Just though I'd share that with y'all. What can I say? I'm easily amused ;)

ETA Yay!! [livejournal.com profile] venusinfurs90 found a copy on youtube...

I also have a collection of sea songs. I have trouble finding them.(I have barely enough to drive my family insane on car trips.)

Maybe someday you can give me a suggestion list. I had not heard of this one.

I has found a new victim! :D

((Sorry, just that it's funny that you should be asking for sea songs because I actually have a massive collection and have been sending some of my favourites to Anteros and I'd be more than happy to send some to you too. ^^))

Oh I think we can supply you with enough suggestions to drive your family completely insane! In fact if you send me a direct message with an email address I'd be happy to send some to you! [livejournal.com profile] venusinfurs90 has already sent me a pile of fabulous French sea shanties.

Rogues Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs and Chanteys is a great place to start. Don't let the fact that it was originally a Pirates of the Caribbean offshoot put you off. There are some brilliant tracks on this including some genuine bona fide nautical filth.

I can also highly recommend Anglicana by Eliza Carthy and Penguin Eggs by Nic Jones.

Every fangirl needs that cd! And yes, Cape Cod Girls is indeed lovely. Daughter has learned many highly inappropriate songs off that cd. Though thankfully we have managed to steer her clear of Baltimore Whores and Good Ships Venus!

Agreed! Had a discussion about this when I was introducing my friend to Hornblower and we were watching The Frogs and the Lobsters. I don't care how much of a BAMF-snarky-snark-god My Lord Major E. is, the Navy still wins out over the Army any day.^^ (Just thought I'd throw in my own two pence there lol)

Oh I whole heartedly agree! Both about Major M'Lord Eddrington and the rest of the Army ;) One of my mates loaned me her Sharpe box set about six months ago and I've watched a whole one episode ;)

I tried reading a Sharpe book D: bad bad idea. Just...argh. >< Bad writing is bad. Bad writing when there are no ships to make up for it is worse.

I've been told I'm something of a snob though, so maybe my word isn't all that trustworthy. XD But yeah...I couldn't finish the book. The bad guys were all too conveniently stupid.
