Finally, after months of prevaricating, I have started reading David Cordingly's Cochrane The Dauntless. Almost everyone I know round here has recommended it to me at some stage. Twenty pages in and what do I find? A typo. AND IT'S THE NAME OF MY HOME TOWN. Tsk!

"In 1792 Captain Alexander Cochrane was in command of the 28-gun frigate Hind with orders to patrol the east coast of Scotland. He spent that year cruising back and forth from Berwick to Stornaway in the Western Isles."

The only time my home port gets a mention in an Age of Sail history and it's spelt wrong!! It's Stornoway not Stornaway Mr Cordingly. Masthead for you sonny!

Pedant, moi?

But wait, what if there is a Stornaway in the Western Isles that you've just never heard of? You should go and have a good look! (Holiday!!!)

You should go and have a good look! (Holiday!!!)
If only! Holidays in the Western Isles are "tricky" shall we say as I am always expected to stay with family ;)

Well, as long as you know where your family is located at all times, it should be pretty easy to avoid them. ;)

Rofl! Funnily enough partner has suggested the same strategy ;) We were once on holiday five islands to the south of Lewis and mother suggested popping down to visit us!

This icon pic was taken on that holiday :)

It looks lovely! :)
It's your own fault, you know. You should have told your mother you're going to Madagascar or something. ;)

If you wanted to be even more pedantic, it'd be Steòrnabagh - since that's the local Scots Gaelic spelling, apparently - but yes, Stornoway is the correct rendering. *sigh* Typical Sassenach.

Berwick to Stornoway! That must've been a cold cruise, brr.

Ceart gu leòr! Tha sin glè mhath :D

Steòrnabagh being derived from the Norse for "bay of steering" And a very fine harbour it is too! We'll let Cordingly off since he's a Sassenach and otherwise a very good read ;)

You're telling me! Ullapool to Stornoway is bad enough.

I am now imagining Mr Cordingly sitting with the other midshipmen on Justinian and failing his navigation lessons ;)

suppose that with the above should go a picture of a NBFC but they all feature rain ;) so here is one along with a nice posh english boy (these days pretending to be from " sarf london")
picture of same pending...

What a cheek!

You know you should do a fic where Archie catches Horatio mispelling various Scottish place names and isn't amused, also you should have Horatio attempt to pronounce 'Milingavie'. :P

Hehe! Now you've got me thinking....

also you should have Horatio attempt to pronounce 'Milingavie'.
I think I shall have Archie asking Horatio to meet him on Sauchiehall Street before they go to Culzean to visit the family ;)

If he can't spell destinations correctly then I would totally count that as a navigation fail. XD
