I so wish I had been able to buy this book which was sold by Marine and Cannon Books earlier this year. This extract is taken from their catalogue, kindly bequeathed to me by

The Midshipman's Friend or Hints from the Cockpit by Lt Arthur Parry Eardley-Wilmott, 1845.
Lieutenant Eardley-Wilmott came from a distinguished naval family. Here he sets out to write a guide for young midshipmen in the cockpits of British men-o'-war during the early years of Victoria's reign. The first chapters concern work aloft, from there he continues to give hints and advice on a number of duties and situations likely to face midshipmen: orders in case of fire, quarters, stationing men, punishment and crimes, drunkenness, breaking leave, granting leave, robbery and insolence, noise, qualities requisite in a commanding officer, education of midshipmen, allowances of midshipmen, keeping a journal, supplying charts, supplying barometers, flogging in the navy, manning the navy, on the evils of smoking, visiting foreign stations and general remarks. The author gives his assessment on the argument for and against flogging and reaches the conclusion: "I consider, therefore, abolishing this most necessary punishment would be the greatest evil that could befall the navy..."
Sounds like a right little charmer doesn't he?!
