I'm afraid I'm a typical islander of my generation. My father and all his family spoke gaelic but didn't see any point in teaching it to us. I'm fluent enough to speak to small children and dogs (!) but conversations with adults are beyond me! I'm hoping that my daughter will go into gaelic medium education though.
I was talking to someone during the week who did their thesis in gaelic poetry. Small world! I'm sure I would probably know someone who knows them :)
That's still more than I can speak, although I am fluent in Glaswegian. :P My grandparents are Irish and so learned Irish Gaelic in school, but it was very much the way we learn French, they never spoke it at home and now only remember words and phrases.
She did say she cheated and worked with translations.
I'm reasonably competent in Glaswegian myself these days though most folk usually suss me as a teuchter ;-) Daughter however is already fluent at the age of 3!
