Speed Dating Georgian Style...
Jan. 10th, 2011 11:30 pmStop sniggering at the back there. I'm not making this up. This is a genuine event being hosted by the National Museum of the Royal Navy (*speechless*) at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard on the 12th of February. Just in time for Valentines day. Awwwww. The blurb runs as follows:
Including a drink on arrival, a live string quartet to accompany the evening, the opportunity to view some of the museum’s most romantic love letters which will be on display for the first time and of course the chance to meet up to 50 like-minded single people in a unique setting.
Please also bring your own mask!
One can only hope that it's Jack and Stephen playing in the string quartet and not poor old tone deaf Hornblower. Could someone explain what the masks are for please? I'm getting slightly worried...
What to wear for such an occassion though? Well I do believe I've found the perfect thing. Saumarez Ethical Lingerie! Oh yes. According to their website "Saumarez is sexy, confident, elegant and sophisticated. Who said being good can't be fun!" And who'd have thought an Admiral could produce such stylish knickers?!
Do you think that's really what they wore under their nice white breeches?
I'm sorry, I'll get me coat...

Okay, somehow the image I have in my mind is that of 50 respectable ladies and gentlemen aged 85+ and tipsy on port. Well, I guess "speed" is a relative concept… XD
But I hope they'll be wearing more than just lingerie!

Date: 2011-01-11 06:46 am (UTC)I actually spent a fairly fruitless couple hours a while back, trying to find out just exactly what sort of underwear they did wear. 'Smallclothes' get mentioned in fics a lot, but I couldn't find that they were a standard item of clothing or just something some people wore and some didn't, and I couldn't find agreement on whether they were worn at night or taken off, much less an actual description or list of common materials. I suppose this leaves me free to put the boys in silk underdrawers if I want to.

Archie is probably thinking of opening the equivalent site for navyboys even as we speak !

Date: 2011-01-12 12:26 pm (UTC)One should never have one's knickers showing on the quarter deck. It's never a good look.

What
Actually *cough* I've got some information on 18th century undergarments here. I think I might have to write a post on naval knickers next week! :D

( Sir Edward is,uncharcteristically, speechless) though whether its the black silk underwear or the mention of the unspeakable Lord de Saumarez I have not yet ascertained..)

Date: 2011-01-11 11:26 am (UTC)I mean my brother made admiral and all that and has a portrait of himself by Ingres and one of him looking impossibly dashing and rather like father.
And yes, I became the 2 nd viscount but only for the last ten months of my life and so how did I go down in naval history ?
as the recipient of Father's advice about diahorrea and drinking too much and getting your navigational observations correct - grrrr
I love the old man very nuch but sometimes parents can be embarrassing
speaking of which - you want a comment on our underwear ?As always father is there ..
" always sleep in calico, be you ever so hot, it is a great security against the diseases of that country (the west Indies".
See what I mean - can you spare a thought for us poor eldest sons, dear ladies ?
PBP- (I mean wasn't my middle name enough ?)

Date: 2011-01-12 01:55 pm (UTC)How lovely to meet you! You do indeed have my most profound commiserations regarding your short spell as viscount. And your lack of portraiture. And the parental advice. And the middle name thing. Who would be an eldest son? Who indeed!
With sympathy
Madam A.

Date: 2011-01-11 12:13 pm (UTC)I remember that Stephen wears drawers. He was most put out when the French had nicked them. And Jack wears nothing under his breeches (apart from maybe a longer shirt). Killick once complained that his captain would catch his death of cold if he did not start wearing drawers. *g*
Just thought you'd like to know that I have put up a photo of Jack and Stephen Bear making music together in my recent post...

Date: 2011-01-12 12:50 pm (UTC)Why on earth did the French nick Stephen's knickers?! (And why does it not surprise me that Jack goes commando? ;)
Jack and Stephen bears?! Must have missed that *dashes off to see*

They didn't wear underwear if I rememnber right. It was the shirt/shift that was it, pretty much, no knickers until 19th century, and that was for women. I have no idea when male underpants were invented really o_O

3) I have knickers not too different from that...

I suspect Bartholomew's letters are far to precious and are kept in a temperature controlled vault at the National Archive.
3) I have knickers not too different from that...
Me too. But I have never worn them under wet white breeches. Have you?
