Sincere hearts and open waistcoats
Jan. 24th, 2011 12:43 amWhile I was reading up on 18th century underwear (as you do) I came across this lovely quote from a 1710 edition of The Tatler:
"A sincere heart has not made half so many conquests as an open waistcoat."
I like that. And here are Horatio and Archie demonstrating the truth of that statement.

That's all :)

Date: 2011-01-24 11:32 am (UTC)How about this from a biography of an eminent naval hero:
his manners as a gentleman were no less elegant than his person, which was tall and graceful, while his handsome features denoted a heart susceptible of the dictates both of humanity and love....
and, alas no dear readers this isnotfrom amy biography of Edward Pellew - would it were
it is from Ross' Memoirs and Correspondence of Admiral Lord de Saumarez. From Original Papers in the Possession of his Family.

If that description is even half true it's no wonder

Sir Edward and the rest of the senior crew are reflecting that their open waistcaot days may be ended -other than to acommodate feeling full over dinner !

Nonsense! Sir Edward still looks very fine. Very fine indeed.
