Read My Lips
Feb. 4th, 2011 11:45 pmIn 1992 I attended a series of events in Glasgow centered around an exhibition at the Tramway gallery called Read My Lips: the New York AIDS Polemic. The exhibition featured powerful and provocative works by artists including Keith Haring, Gran Fury, David Wojnarowicz, ACT UP and others. What really made an impression on me though were the discussions, workshops and spoken word events which explored a wide range of issues relating to sexual identity and orientation, gender and radical sexuality. I vividly remember the positive energy of these events and I think this was the first time I heard sexual orientation described as a fluid continuum. That made a lot of sense to me at the time and it still does.
But anyway, why am I telling you all this now? By some kind of weird coincidence
venusinfurs90 posted the picture below to her outrageously gorgeous tumblr but a dream within a dream. It's one of the original posters for the Read My Lips events. I had a copy of this poster on my wall almost ten years ago and I still have a programme somewhere with this image on it. And LOOK! Its Navyboys*!! I had no idea! Clearly my fascination with slashy Nayboys pre-dates (predicts?!) Horatio and Archie. Who'd have thought?!

*Okay, maybe they're not actually Navyboys, but you catch my drift ;)
