Just because it made me smile....

Talking of tailored suits, I caught part of Sebastian Faulks series Faulks on Fiction Episode 3: The Snob on tv the other night. It was all a bit ho hum, but at one point Faulks is seen in an un-named Saville Row tailor's being fitted for a suit, in a glass case behind him was a quite the most gorgeous full dress naval uniform absolutely dripping with gold lace. From the glimpse I caught of it, I'd guess it dated from the early 19th century. I wonder who the tailor was?

The invitations to the royal wedding supposedly give men the option of wearing a "leisure suit" which made me laugh--in US parlance that would mean cheap polyester clothes from the 70s. :D

I love that picture. I've been trawling the net for more of those. The boys are so deliciously louche.

[livejournal.com profile] mylodon and I were wondering once if there is a special scale for measuring the loucheness of butlers ;)

Oh those eyes! He's a fair approximation of my mental image of Jonty Stewart, actually. The commercial artists in those days just make me swoon.

Yes, mine too! I sent this to [livejournal.com profile] mylodon as soon as I came across his :)

If you like commercial art from this period it's also worth having a look at the Retro Images advertising collection at the Historyworld blog.

Probably Gieves & Hawkes; they have the address of No. 1 Saville Row and have been the naval and military tailors for officers since Victorian times.

Here's their 'normal' website, with a picture of their foyer;

And here's the 'military' website;

Oooh aren't you clever! I can't tell it it's the same tailor from the pics but I bet it is. There were several gorgeous military uniforms visible in the background as well as the naval uniform. I don't think I've heard of Gieves and Hawkes before so thanks very much for the link.

Oh and that icon always creases me up! :)
