...though after a 37 hour journey with only two one hour transfers I'm not quite sure where I am tbh! Actually the journey back was fine apart from the bit where poor daughter did a grand impersonation of Horatio being seasick at Spithead half way to Dubai. Ah the joys of parenting.

I am far too knackered to write anything sensible about the trip, so instead I'm going to tell you about what I watched on my flight because I'm sure you're all just dying to know. As I am a shallow fangirl I spent most of the journey watching Band of Brothers to catch Jamie Bamber's brief appearance. Actually I was so impressed with the series that I watched all ten episodes back to back, though I must admit I was somewhat shell shocked by the end. I couldn't help noting that once again Mr Bamber plays a lieutenant who is hampered by an unfit commanding officer who cracks under fire thus endangering the lives of his men. He must get terrible déjà vu. For once though he doesn't get shot, despite everyone else getting blown to pieces.

I also finally watched Inception but I'm afraid it didn't really engage me. I would probably give it a second chance though and I did have great fun spotting [livejournal.com profile] _likimeya's icon shots!

Oh, and I also watched The Frogs And The Lobsters (again) and was amazed (yet again) at the sheer outrageous slashiness of it all.

I'm rather glad that's my kiwi family responsibilities fulfilled until the next time. Picturesque as the land of the long white cloud may be, I am very glad to be back on the big damp foggy island nor'nor'west of Ushant. Actually it's not damp and foggy here at all, it's a beautiful spring evening, the daffodils are out in my garden and there was a lovely nautical e-card from [livejournal.com profile] nodbear welcoming me home :) I'll try and post some pics of of NZ at the weekend if I can find any that aren't of family and / or cows. Now I am going to have wine and fall asleep on the couch. Boy it's nice to be back!

Picture of very fine bull? While doing so could you do an identification chart for Edward - he never could tell one animal from another - he could start now though !

Glad to see that particularly charming icon of the delightful Mr Kennedy is back too = another reason for welcoming you home ma'am.

My Dear Lady Pellew,

How lovely to hear from you! Surely you jest though? While I understand that that Sir Edward's skills in animal husbandry may leave a little to be desired I simply can not believe that, after fathering six children, he still can not tell the difference between a bull and a cow?!

I remain as alwasy your fondest, etc, etc
Madam A

PS The charming Mr Kennedy sends his best regards and hopes you are not too troubled by visting middies.

Visiting midshipmen are not usually much trouble I have found. They do rather eat one out of house and home, it is true but otherwise they are mostly a little tongue tied and shy.At least at first ...

Visiting french captains on the other hand can be rather - er eloquent so one must be prepared for all eventualities.

I thank Mr Kennedy for his good wishes and assure him that he [and Mr Hornblower of course]are always a welcome sight.

have just heard that Madam Nodbear has made a discovery of another portrait of Edward so am off to see it before it gets posted on this fasicnating jourtnal.

yours affectionately and etc etc

Dearest Susan,

Wise words indeed. One must always be on ones guard when promenading with charming French capitaines. Who knows where they might lead? ;)

Mr Kennedy adds that Mr Hornblower was also terribly tongue tied as a middy but as you can see he has since been cured of that particular affliction.

I shall await the publication of Madam N's latest portrait of dear Sir Edward with the greatest anticipation.

As ever your devoted etc, etc.

Dear Anteros

Thank Mr Kennedy for his fond reminiscence of earlier Mr Hornblower. He himself one could not really have ever termed tongue tied, in any sense of the word.Charming young man indeed.

The portrait is rather a success - it should appear tomorrow as I understand it...
Good night

Hee, I know what you mean about ending up watching BoB all the way through. (And there's a fair amount of slashiness there, in amongst the angst and woe...)

Glad you're back! (Oy, what a voyage, though.)

Jeez you're not wrong about the slashiness! Particularly Webster making eyes at the new West Point grad in The Last Patrol. I loved the way the relationships built up over the series, especially Winters and Nixon.

Welcome back - ! I should not have been suprised if a virtual razeed 44 gun frigate had turned up to collect you - the Indy has been missing her co- biographer very much :)

but its smiles all round as [livejournal.com profile] anteros_lmc climbs over the side - not to mention pipes and drummers
"man the sides, look lively there ..."
off to bed shortly - may just manage to get Alex McVicar part 3 up in your honour -
otherwise welcome - and goodnight !

Ooh had you finally managed to get to the bottom of the whole midshipman / masters mate rating business? We are not the only ones to have been confused by this system of ranking. I am currently reading the account of a maters mate who was imprisoned by the French along side the ratings as they initially did not recognise "masters mate" as being a commissioned rank.

Date: 2011-03-26 10:35 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] nodbear.livejournal.com
Well I wouldn't say to the bottom of it but just a little something - I think there were nuances which we will never grasp but I have a bit more idea ,pay books are so instructive!

love your story about the masters mate chucked in with the ratings
lets hope he finally got his own cell - or someone to share it with ;)

Archie and Horatio here are probably puzzled by rankings of middies ...

hoping to go off to bed soon because of BST and need the sleep so may have to catch up with anything much more tomorrow !

The master's mate in question is one Donat Henchy O'Brian. He was captured when his ship, the Hussar frigate, ran aground and foundered on the Saints while carrying depatches to England for a certain Captain Sir Edward Pellew!

O'Brian was marched to Givet with the ships ratings while his fellow officers were sent to Verdun. He was eventually transferred to Verdun when Captain Jahleel Brenton intervened on his behalf.

Definitely goodbye in your case! We passed through Melbourne at six o'clock yesterday morning but barely had an hour to transfer.

Hmmm. Little Henry is a small midshipman who has obviously gone AWOL because I posted one to you and one to [livejournal.com profile] eglantine_br before I went away. Hers crossed the Atlantic promptly, I wonder where your's has gone? Off chacing prizes perhaps ;)

Huzzah! I'm so glad he arrived eventually! Isn't he a cutie pie? :D I found him in a second hand book shop in Glasgow, the ladies in the shop had no idea who donated him or where he came from. There were 10 copies on the counter and I bought seven of them! All have now gone to good homes apart from one. Perhaps Molly would be an ideal person to take care of him? :)

Band of Brothers is well worth the watch even without the odd Bamber glimpse for a couple of episodes.

I don't remember Frogs and Lobsters being that slashy, the only thing I really remember is the scene where Archie is clearly admiring Horatio's arse in his new uniform.

I thought Band of Brothers was excellent, though watching all ten hours back to back is a bit grueling! I am considering buying the box set so I can rewatch it at a more relaxed pace.

Well you'd have to be blind to miss that! The other bit I thought was particularly obvious was when it cuts straight from Horatio and Mariette snogging to Archie fretting on the bridge. Poor lamb, he deserves better.
