I don't usually go for military types but these guys were just to camp too resist. I picked them up in the antique print shop just outside Katikati in New Zealand and I have no idea of their date or provenance. There were about a dozen other prints in this series, mostly of French and German regiments though there was one Highland regiment featured too.

These guys are just crying out for captions doncha think? And btw, can anyone explain why the Fusilier on the right appears to be wearing two hats?! Nice breeches though and damn fine boots too!

I think for the Gardes Fusiliers (with appropriate dodgy French accent);

"Zis eez my sabre. Eet eez bigger zan yours, non?"

And for the Garde du Corps;

"There was no definite proof, but many held a suspicion that the King was into leather bondage."

Mais oui monsieur. But my 'at is tres grand, non?

There was no definite proof, but many held a suspicion that the King was into leather bondage.
However there was definitely proof that the King was a "three times a night" man.

Just noticed the bare ARMS on the left group. Maybe it was unseasonably hot? But leather thing does seem more likely.

Lol! You made me do a double take there! I think the bare arms are actually buff coloured sleeves. But then again, with those boots and that attitude, I really can't be sure ;)

I'm pretty sure the one in the first pic on the far left is touting for business.

I did indeed. Here to be precise Titles of Aongatete. They have one of the most eclectic (and dustiest!) print collections I've ever come across which they have amassed over the years by buying up odd collection from here and there.

:D Amazing what turns up in the strangest places! I also got a book about war cartoonists that has a couple of chapters on the Navy and the Napoleonic wars covering Gilray, Rowlandson et al.

I think it can be the plume, there's, er, how to say it... fastener? catch? hook? ...at the bottom of this 'second hat', in front. They're an officer and a gunner of a lower rank, seems to me? Then maybe their uniforms differ also in plumes, among other things?

I kind of guessed it was some kind of plume, but how on earth do you make a plume like that?! Is it fur? Feathers? WTF?!

The artist could flatter this a bit. If not in size, then at least in structure. The officer's feathers also look a tiny bit too thick. Soft, light but bushy fur or feathers could give this effect if properly cut. And with no wind. ;)

I still think that gunner is overcompensating for something ;)

And with no wind. ;)
Well heaven forbid that such fine officers should be troubled by wind! XD
