National Historic Ships in the UK have launched their second annual Photography Competition. Entries are invited in a variety of categories "...from all those with an interest in maritime heritage, including school children, historic vessel owners, maritime enthusiasts and those with knowledge of traditional skills or nautical techniques."* I rather like the sound of the Traditional Maritime Skills in Action category :)

Here are a few of my favourites from last years winners, two of which were taken by school kids!

Cannon in front of HMS Victory mast

Wheels on Warrior by Matt WoodsBeer Lugger by Jon Palmer

*The competition webpage makes no mention of "all those who have an interest in Navyboys". What an oversight!

Just gorgeous. For some reason I especially like the beer lugger.

The lugger is beautiful isn't it? There is something very tactile about the shape and texture of clinker built boats. My dad had a small one and I loved it.

I just envy you for living in the country which has the great maritime history & tradition :)

The photos certainly do justice to the beautiful ships. Sadly preserving these ships is a constant battle and our current Westminster government has been threatening to axe the committee that advises on the care and preservation of the ships.

Yes indeed. I missed this competition last year but I'll definitely look out for the winners this year.
