Today saw the opening of Glasgow's new £74 million Riverside Museum on the banks of the River Clyde. The Museum, in the form of a steel wave, was designed by Iraqi architect Zaha Hadid and houses the exhibits formerly held in the hugely popular Transport Museum, including the city's maritime collections. The Museum also provides a new berth for Glasgow's tall ship Glenlee which also has a swanky new website The Tallship at Riverside.

Unfortunately it's been an absolutely rotten day here in Glasgow. It's been raining cats and dogs all day. It's such a shame as it was a glorious summer day here yesterday. Typical! I have no idea when I'll actually get to visit the new museum, as things are a little busy at the moment, but I'll report back when I do :)

What a building! :D

So Glasgow and my town have a Zaha Hadid building in common. Our phaeno science center was designed by her.

Nice isn't it? It looks very plain from the back but it's stunning from the water front.

I rather like the design and I think it was a brave choice by the city as there was quite a bit of grumbling that the contract wasn't awarded to a Scottish architect. Your science centre also looks very impressive!

Since we do not have really old buildings in the city center (my town will be 73 next Friday), we are glad to have some by present day internationally acclaimed architects. Townhall was pleased when Ms Hadid did not withdraw her name during the construction, as she has been known to do in the past when she was not satisfied with the execution of her designs. *g*

Let me know when you would like a tour. :D

Maybe when daughter is a little older I'll take you up on your offer! You could also pop over to Glasgow while you're in Edinburgh for the Cochrane exhibition. It's only 50 mins on the train and the trains run every quarter hour.

There is a tv programme about the new museum and Ms Hadid's design next Monday so I must try to remember to watch it.

Glasgow is a wonderful city and provides a real contrast to Edinburgh. They really are very different cities despite being so close together.

I like the building and the city skyline, but what I like most about the picture is the red of the ship, and the sky. Looks like that was a day where a bunch of rain has just passed by, and the sun was just starting to come through. The color of the museum is perfect, just the same as the clouds in the distance. Pretty.

There has been quite a lot of grumbling about the building, as there seems to be with any new building, but I rather like it. I also love these rain washed skies we get so many of here. People think grey skies are dull but there are so many beautiful shades. I have no idea when I'll get to visit the Museum but I'll take some pics when I go.
