Yesterday we went down to Greenock to see the tall ships race which has come to the Clyde for the first time since 1999. Against all the odds the weather was glorious, the boats were just stunning and the crews were not bad either ;)

The main attraction seemed to be the Colombian ship Gloria which was crewed by the most outrageously flash bunch of sailor boys. The officers uniforms were black with gold braid and the crew were dressed head to toe in blinding white. Aviator shades appeared to be de rigeur. Needless to say there was a queue a mile long to visit the Gloria and we were reliably informed by a local lassie that the Colombians took Greenock by storm on Friday night.

We're planning to go back down to Greenock tomorrow to see the parade of sail as the ships leave the Clyde so hopefully I'll get some more pics then.

You're very welcome! It was really amazing seeing so many of these huge ships all in one place. I'll try and take some more pics tomorrow but we'll be lucky if the weather holds.

Just gorgeous. I especially like the shots of the masts and yards, and the pins and cables. You can see the pride that each ship feels, and the care they took. (I am picturing a Bush type guy making sure it is all perfect!)

And you got your sunny day! Hope all 3 of you had a wonderful time.

I love the textures of all the different cables. All the ships were immaculate so I can only assume each one had their own Lt Bush!

We all had a great day out, though daughter admitted that she got a bit bored of the ships and preferred the funfair. She was very patient though :)

The idea of the Columbians taking Greenock by storm sounds like the stuff of comedy gold.

Oh I believe it was! I have it on good authority that the crews hit the town in full dress uniform and that the Colombians made a bee line for the young ladies of Greenock, who no doubt thought they had died and gone to heaven XD

Wonderful! What beautiful ships, thanks so much for sharing (I hoped you might have made a few snaps, hehe!)

One of those moments when I regret even more than usual that I live in a land-locked place - a dinghy race just isnt' the same...
